MTV gets set to rock Pakistan Published: Wednesday, 3 May, 2006, 11:35 AM Doha Time
KARACHI: Music Television (MTV) – the first ever music channel of the world – and still the largest (with over 100 channels) is reportedly getting ready to launch in Pakistan.
Wiqar Ali Khan, who is serving as one of the executives of the channel as well as a VJ, said the channel would be formally launched by the end of this year.
“I cannot give the exact dates of the launch right now, because we will officially announce our openings when we do. But it is definitely coming to Pakistan,” he said.
MTV will arguably be Pakistan’s fourth music channel. Several music channels are already catering to the country’s music needs.
Some of the more established ones include ‘The Muzik,’ ‘Indus Music,’ ‘ARY Music.’ Another entertainment channel ‘Strum TV’ will also be reportedly making its mark this year.
Also, besides these three music channels, other family channels such as ‘Hum TV’ also play songs.
Besides, word has it that another news channel, Geo TV, is also thinking about launching a music version of its network, a channel called “Aag TV.”
Wiqar said MTV would not only concentrate on promoting Pakistani musicians and songs, it would also play songs from around the world.
“I believe it is MTV’s policy to bring in a bit of everything, but our priority would be Pakistani music,” he said.
He said MTV had over 100 channels catering to music and musicians around the world such as MTV Malaysia, MTV Philippines, MTV Italy, MTV UK.
“We will be launching and subsequently working on PTV Pakistan,” he said.
The rights for bringing the channel to Pakistan were awarded to Indus Network, he said.
“We are in the process of preparing our offices and studios here in Karachi.
A lot of TV channels had presented their bids to start and telecast MTV Pakistan, but eventually it was won by Indus,” he said.
“Indus Music is going international. It will be serving songs of Pakistani artists to an international viewership. It will finish its operations here and will be replaced with MTV Pakistan which would cater to the local audience,” he said talking of the chances of a clash of interest between the two.
Wiqar also said that international artists such as Sting, Michael Bolton or even Michael Jackson would be brought over to Pakistan through his channel.
“MTV will definitely bring international artists here to Pakistan,” he said.
Head of Indus Music Fariha Chhapra confirmed that the rights for the music channel had been awarded to the Indus Network.
“The tentative date for the launch of the channel here is June and July. But things are still being finalised. Jalil Akhtar is heading the project,” she said. – Internews

yeah, like 2 miles from the French Beach. You need a diplomatic pass to get in. Also the somiani Beach area gets pretty wild parties here and there.

I personally am against MTV and Channel V who likes to inject their way of thinking which looks more kool for upcoming generations.

Domestic songs and music albums will have no choice but to copy or imitate or follow their steps to survive.

All the good work of Shehzad roy, strings will go waste. They wont be able to sell their songs with out anything "hot" in it.

Yaar it's not the mullahs or stuff. A normal middle class family won't even let that stuff on their tv when family memebrs are around. Hvae you seen the stuff they do in those vids? And apart from that, when the pakistani teen sees all those rap vidoes, they be'll trying to act all this "gangster" and crap that ruin our socitey really bad.

If a non-muslim country like china pulls out **** sites from it's internet, so that the chinese socitey does'nt screws up or someting, then why is it that we as muslims are forgetting our values and trying to act like the west? Devlopment is alright but not this stuff.

Pakistan needs to devlop with all it's values and culture still around.

Thunder...i dont know what part of Pak youre from....but theyve had access to satellite TV (MTV,star,V,etc) since 1990 . Also the Pakistani pop industry is HUGE. So i dont know what your big fears are about "values and developments" . Pakistan is a pretty westernized country with the exception of the fundos that live up near afghanistan.

Westernized in terms of what? In terms of living style, there are still a lot of people that are very religious within Pakistan (not talking about militants). In terms of living standard, only medium class and rich people are at a western standard.

Actully it's quite possibile. We can be alot morden but within islamic limits. It's not that hard.

Thats true i have to agree with you. We shouldn't get away with our religion in the name of being westernized. I am noticing that since that all al-qaida related stuff have been started we are fed up with our religion, and dont follow the Almis and role models of Islam which we should. I have noticed many people now insulting Almis sometimes calling them "Mullahs" relation them with Al-Qaida, taliban related terrorists.

Lets not forget it, its a good thing that we are now thinking more clearly, but lets not get too hard on it.
