Move Over Missile, DRDO on Rath Yatra -The New Indian Express

NEW DELHI: You will be surprised to know where India’s premier defence research organisation has been spending its time and resources. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which has the onerous responsibility of developing state-of-the-art arms and ammunition systems for the Indian armed forces, has allegedly spent over Rs 5 crore of its funds, and its energies, in developing a chariot. Yes, you heard it right, a chariot (see pic).

It is not an ordinary chariot. To be fair to DRDO, we must confess that the chariot that it so painstakingly built over a period of one year has used copious amounts of silver (which explains its cost) and has all the embellishments you should expect from a royal chariot.

DRDO developed this hi-tech chariot and ‘donated’ it to Alandi Temple in June after a bullock—according to Director of Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) or R&DE, Pune, Dr S Guruprasad—was killed during the 21-day annual palki yatra to Pandharpur last year. He accepted that the chariot was built by the laboratory which he heads.

The story of this mind-boggling decision by an organisation which is supposed to serve the cause of science, and not religion, does not end here.

A senior scientist, who rebelled against this ‘absurd’ venture and filed a complaint with the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), had to pay for it. The DRDO has not only stripped him off his ongoing projects, but also transferred him out of the Pune centre to a post where he has been left to waste.

The scientist in his petition stated that since he filed the complaint under the whistleblower policy of the CVC, the identity of the complainant should have been kept confidential. The petitioner also stated that “the CVO is to ensure that no punitive action is taken by any concerned administrative authority against any person on perceived reason/ suspicion of being ‘whistleblower’.”

But “since filing the complaint, the conduct of higher officials, especially the alleged officials, totally changed and they started harassing him by removing him from all important projects and took away his project credits on which he was working since long,” said the petition, adding that even the scientist was removed from Combat Engineering Group and put on to Electro Mechanical Systems Group (Missile Launcher Group) wherein he had not relevant expertise. Subsequently, he was transferred out from R&DE (Engineers), Pune to a unit in Nasik.

The Bombay High Court, taking cognizance of the scientist’s petition, issued notices to the DRDO chief, Defence Secretary and the CVC on November 14 asking them to respond before December 17.

The scientist has alleged that the director of R&DE has utilised around Rs2.5 crore government funds to develop the rath. He claimed that the cost of the rath goes beyond Rs 5 crore, considering the manpower cost for one year. No sanction of the finance ministry was taken to divert defence funds to a religious activity, the scientist alleged.

Dafuq is going on at DRDO ?
Considering the "project" has been going on for more than one year, sickulars can't blame Modi this time.

DRDO may have taken the Indo-China potential border engagements(aka Mahabharata 2.0) quite literally.
Well at least they can be the proud designers of a weapon that no one makes.Who the hell needs to make missiles and advanced weaponry that could be easily imported, right guys?

Whoever is responsible for this should be punished

Wait what? I was thinking this was going to be some faking news joke? How come no other news source is reporting this till now...

Well, with all the news of the Atomic bomb, stealth and all of that being pre-existing in ancient India.. perhaps DRDO have stumbled upon ancient plans through which they produced this weapon.

Seriously though, what a waste of government funds. If they really wanted to help out in terms of public support.. perhaps a digitized monitoring system for temples(and other religious places) to identity potential terrorists and/or help in designing optimum evacuation plans and so on would have been better. But a Chariot??

And look at all those engineers feeling happy if they just bought a certification of Nirvana or something.

Okay found another source, with some tech details about the Rath. They claim it is a part of CSR, and most of the materials used were donated by others, but still..!
DRDO allegedly spent Rs 5 cr to build a chariot for a temple in Pune

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has allegedly spent Rs 5 crore of its funds on creating a chariot for a temple in Maharashtra, states a report by The New Indian Express . The 'hi-tech' chariot, which contains 'copious' amounts of silver, was made during the course of a year and was donated to the Alandi temple in Pune in June.

The chariot is battery-operated and can run for about 12 hours after being fully charged. It is made of carbon fibre which weighs around two tonnes.

The creators of the chariot claim that the 'project' was made 'under the head of corporate social responsibility'. "Though most of this (chariot) was donated by private vendors and parties, we have not accepted money from anyone. Donations were taken only in material contribution,” Director of Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) or R&DE, Pune, Dr S Guruprasad told The Sunday Standard .

The report states that 't his newspaper has learnt that there is no such budget under the head of CSR in the organisation to carry out religious programmes'.

The DRDO's move however did not seem to have gone well down with some in the organisation. The New Indian Express reports that a senior scientists protested against the 'absurd' project and also filed a complaint with the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). The scientist reportedly was 'stripped off' his projects and even transferred out of Pune.

Based on the scientist's petition, the Bombay High Court has issued notices to the DRDO chief, Defence Secretary and the CVC on November 14 and has asked them to respond before December 17, adds the report.
