Drone, which Israel unsuccessfully tried to intercept, crossed into Israel 'as a result of human error'
Israeli Searcher drone sold to Russia
Moscow acknowledged flying drone over the Israeli-controlled Golan heights last month, saying it was the result of a human error, the Haaretz daily reported early on Sunday, citing unnamed Israeli officials.
Israel fired two Patriot missiles at an unidentified drone that entered Israeli airspace from Syria on July 17, but the missiles failed to intercept the unmanned aircraft and it returned to its origin.
According to Haaretz, the incident was discussed by the Israeli and Russian militaries; the two countries have set up a coordination mechanism following Russia's intervention in Syria on behalf of the embattled President Bashar Assad.
The airspace in the border region between Syria and Israel has been the site of similar incidents.
In September 2014, Israeli shot down a Syrian fighter jet, which Israel said infiltrated the country's air space, the first such incident in over 30 years.
That August, Israel reportedly shot down a drone that penetrated Israel's air space over the Golan Heights.
It was reported By Mako news earlier that the drone that penetrated into Israel was no other than the IAI searcher.
Israel has sold this particular model, called the Searcher, to Russia in the past. In fact, Israel granted Russia permission to assemble the drones in Syria itself.
