Overcoming its initial hesitation regarding participation at the 70th World War II commemorative meet organized by China on September 3 in Beijing as it may stoke anti-Japanese sentiments, the Modi government may depute a Minister of State to attend the event.
It is understood that MoS for External Affairs VK Singh may be deputed to represent India at the event. The Modi government was in two minds whether to be part of a function that might witness anti-Japan references, given Delhi’s growing proximity to Tokyo.
Over the past decade, Indo-Japan ties have been growing in stature with defence as the new area of cooperation. Ties have received special attention under Modi and Shinzo Abe, who would visit Delhi later this year —his maiden trip since the BJPled governmentcame to power in May last year. While a junior minister may be deputed for the celebrations in Beijing, it may be recalled that President Mukherjee represented India at the World War II commemoration in Moscow last May. An Indian Army contingent also participated at the march past in Russia. However, China has not invited the Indian Army to take part in the parade, officials said.
