BGB said the shells landed at the camp at Buluparha on the border with Myanmar from 9pm to 9:45pm on Wednesday.

The force’s Bandarban Sector Commander Col Habibur Rahman said on Thursday that no casualty had been reported so far but BGB fired several shells in retaliation.

“Security and surveillance in the area have been intensified . We remain alert,” he said.

The officer, however, declined to comment on media reports which said Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) shelling had damaged the helipad of the camp.

“The shells could not be recovered yet. Nothing could be known about the type of the shells.”

Myanmar border guards have formally been informed of the incident, he added.

Referring to frequent clashes between Myanmar military and rebels, the BGB officer said, “Shells fired by any of them might have landed here.”

Bangladesh shares with Myanmar borders stretching about 271 kilometres, including around 150 kilometres in hill areas. The relations of the two neighbours are strained over the Rohingya refugee issue.

BGP kidnapped a Bangladesh border guard following a clash in the Naf river at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar in June last year. Another BGB man was injured in the incident.

Myanmar returned the abducted BGB member eight days later following several rounds of talks.

Another Bangladesh border guard went missing in May 2014 during another round of clashes. Myanmar returned his body two days later.
