More U.S. Airlifters for India; Helicopter Orders Imminent: AINonline

The commander of the Indian Air Force (IAF) said that the IAF would likely acquire at least six more Boeing C-17s and another six Lockheed Martin C-130J airlifters. The first two of six C-130Js already ordered by the IAF have been delivered, and the order for an initial 10 C-17s has been finalized, according to ACM P. V. Naik, who was interviewed for the latest edition of India Strategic magazine.

Naik also said that the selection of new attack, heavy-lift and utility helicopters was imminent. The Boeing AH-64D Apache and the Mil Mi-28N are competing for the attack requirement, while the Boeing CH-47D and the Mil Mi-26T are the contenders for the heavy-lift requirement. The AgustaWestland AW119, Eurocopter AS550 and Kamov Ka-226 are the candidates to fill the light utility helicopter (LUH) requirement.

Naik also commented on the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) selection process. Regarding the elimination of the F-16, F-18, Gripen and Mig-29, he said, “Let’s just say that the two European finalists were the most compliant in the 600-plus parameters that the IAF selection team had set.” Naik predicted that the Indian Ministry of Defence would open the commercial tenders submitted by Team Rafale and Eurofighter in mid-June, but it would take “a couple of months” to evaluate the support, training and offset packages and the life cycle costs.

In late June, India selected the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II to answer its requirement for a basic trainer. The procurement of the new aircraft was hastened by the grounding of the piston-powered HAL HPT-32 Deepak fleet in July 2009, following 17 crashes. While waiting for the new trainer to enter service, India’s pilots have begun their instruction in the jet-powered HAL Kiran Mk II or BAE Systems Hawk advanced trainers.

At AI-11 in February he said all of these helo procurements were "imminent" and should happen by next month (it is now JULY). MoD loves to drag their feet. Imminent could mean 2012!!

new arms race will start in the region
:rofl: I'm sorry, what are you talking about? There is no race and if there were - India has already one. India has always maintained a conventional military edge over Pakistan and in th least 7-8 years this gap has only got bigger. And tell me how would this deal create an arms race more than induction of multiple ACCs, advanced ASW planes, 250-300 FITH Gen fighters etc ???!!!

Alll helicopter deals are likely to be signed this year because in this years defence budget separate money has been allotted for aviation wing of each force (for iaf it doesnot matter) but for other forces it matters. Attack and Heavy lift chopper deal is delayed may be because heavy lift chopper test got delayed. If a particular country offers a combine better deal may be that one will be selected.

hi does anyone know why PC-7 was selected even though it is not the latest trainer from Pilatus????? why didn't we go for PC-21 instead?

True, I think that we even see most IAF aicraft deals to be fixed this year:

LUH - EC AS 550 Fennec
HLH - Hopefully Mi 26 T-2
HCH - Hopefully Apache Block 3

C130J - 4 to 6 more
C17 - 10 + 6?
P8I - 4 more already cleared
A50 Phalcon - 2 more

Basic trainer - Pilatus PC - 7MK2
MMRCA - 126 to 200

Would also hope for a fast decision for the A330 MRTTs, but I guess we see a new competitio, if Boeing joins.

Not fixed, only media is reporting about it and not even the manufacturer had released an official comment on that. It is the PC - 7 MK2, can't tell you what the exact requirements of IAF were, too much speculation from the media in that competition.

Deals likely to be signed this year :

LUH - EC AS 550 Fennec
HLH - Hopefully Mi 26 T-2
HCH - Hopefully Apache Block 3
Mi17 - Follow on order for 52

C130J - 4 to 6 more

P8I - 4 more already cleared
A50 Phalcon - 2 more (I think already signed)

M777 ultra light howitzer
IN helicopter deal (Not enough info on tests but separate funds are allotted for them this year so its likely that one of them is signed this year may 16 MRH deal).

Basic trainer - Pilatus PC - 7MK2 (because of grounding of present trainers these trainers are urgent for IAF)
MMRCA - 126 (No.of won't be increased at this moment but deal is likely to be signed this year as offers are valid till dec only)
ATGM - (God knows what is happening here but if nothing has happened then a deal will be signed for Spike or Javelin)

Add if you guys remember some other deal which is likely to be signed this year....
