What's new

More Than Half of the World’s New TV Dramas Hail From China

Beijingwalker just said a fact. Korean culture is fading in China and Chinese dramas are becoming internationally popular. What's wrong about that?

Whether it's true or untrue nothing's wrong with that.

I'm simply disputing his claim that soft power comes with hard power by pointing that it's untrue for South Korea when K-wave is making new peaks even though SK has much less 'hard power' than China. Or heck even more than Russia, another powerful country.

Don't mention the firewall, each year there are least 10 times of your whole Singapore population number of Chinese go abroad.

So what? There are more than 2x of outbound travel by Singapore residents than Singapore's population too (and our figures exclude land travel to Malaysia, unlike mainland-HK/Macau travel), while you guys have almost 400x of our resident population.

Your figure is no indicative that China in general interacts with the outside world on a daily basis, especially when 80% or 90% of China's population doesn't even hold a passport.

截至目前,持有有效普通护照的内地居民约占内地总人口的13%,预计2019年底持照人数将突破2亿人。

It's like using individual Quora/YouTube replies to show that Chinese dramas are popular overseas. How about at least quote what's trending on YouTube/Instagram around the world which is more representative lmao.

截至目前,持有有效普通护照的内地居民约占内地总人口的13%,预计2019年底持照人数将突破2亿人。
2009年至2018年,内地居民出境10.5亿人次,仅2018年就突破1.6亿人次。
160 million overseas travlers, number one in the world by a huge margin, it's enough interaction with the outside world.

the list of countries with the top spenders on outbound tourism:
  • China: $257.7 billion.
  • United States: $135 billion.
  • Germany: $89.1 billion.
  • United Kingdom: $71.4 billion.
  • France: $41.4 billion.
  • Australia: $34.2 billion.
  • Canada: $31.8 billion.
  • Russian Federation: $31.1 billion.

Whether it's true or untrue nothing's wrong with that.

So soft power is only movies? that's funny way to see it. Again, I said China doesn't have enough hard power, so soft power hasn't come yet, but it'll be there. tell me one country in the human history which had the absolute hard powr over others but no soft power, and soft power includes many things, the world still knows very little about Korea but a lot about China, that's what overal softpower at work.

Just like #40 zectech said, K-dramas are too western in style. South Korean cultural products(dramas, movies, musics) are west bone inside and east skin outside. They don't have to build hard power themselves because Korean soft power is based on west hard power.

Personally speaking, I think East Asian women have most charming look among all human races. But for most westerners, they have stereotype to Asian looks. Which unfortunately was represented by typical Cantonese looks. Koreans are the first ones who showed the world the real beauty of East Asians. The western people were suprised when they realized how beatiful these people are. It is one of the reasons why the Korean culture became popular so fast. China has more attractive stars but seems China is not in a hurry to show off it to the world. Partly because China wants to keep Chinese style culture.

13% of 1.4 billion is already a very big number. All countries are influented by a small part of theire population.

Your friend beijingwalker's post #22 says that SK and Japan are essentially Chinese culture and they are actually promoting Chinese culture in a way, and now you say K-dramas are too Western. So who's correct?

Every culture has their own standard of beauty and I personally prefer East Asian looks too. Or more accurately, East Asian standards of beauty since the following pictures look distinctively East Asian as well.

But I know that my culture isn't universal and Westerners have a very different standard of beauty of East Asians.

Just look at the Chinese supermodels they hire in their fashion shows, they like these masculine facial features like Angelina Jolie. Eg, they like big faces with prominent cheekbones and jawlines while we prefer small faces.

I won't say they are ugly, but I would say that they won't be attractive in our culture.

Meanwhile there are plenty of Chinese and South Korean celebrities who go under the knife and 削骨 to have their face appear smaller. We even have video apps which make our face look smaller on screen.

East Asian males which we consider attractive would be considered too feminine by Western standards, and females considered too 'childlike' such as the female lead in your YouTube video above.

Saying that Koreans show the 'real beauty of East Asians' and Westerners are surprised etc is nonsense. There is no such thing as 'real beauty' when it comes to superficial attractiveness. We just have a different yardstick, that's all, and our perceptions of beauty changes with time.

I think China is a huge nation, that's part of the problem as to why it isn't able to export it's cultural products effectively because since the country is so huge, Chinese people don't really know how to interact with foreign cultures so their cultural products have a hard time translating.

East Asian girls are pretty face wise but their bodies are way too skinny for me. I like girls with nice curves, long legs and a nice ***. Most East Asian girls have stick like figures with no ***, no hips. I'm not really into that.

I did not say Asian look is attractive to all westerners. But to many of them it is. A study says people from all world are not so different in judging beauty standard. I think some people need time to appreciate beauty from other races. When I was a kid I thought white women are urgly like ghost.
As I said Korean cultural products have Asian skin. It is good for improving Asian image anyways.

Nothing about diversity and huge nation. China cultural products were made for domestic market. Never considered to please people with other culture background.

Don't you think western ladies' body curve is a little exaggerated? They can not wear Qipao. Chinese women body curve is more implicit. And more attrictive to me.

The second one looks prettier to me. But their bodies are too skinny. I just don't find it really sexy.

Girls like these are heaven to me. Wouldn't keep my hands off of them. LOL

:what:

You're indeed culturally American.

LMAO Even among Asian Americans, I'm more Americanized than most. Which is weird because I still speak Chinese pretty fluently.

When it comes to girls, definitely prefer non-Asian girls, Whites, Latinas, Light skinned Black girls. Just give me a pretty face, small waist, thick hips and Phat *** and I'm in heaven bro. LOL I mean, how do you say no to this?

Photos can't do east Asian girls justice, they can't show the most important details, East Asian girls have the best skin in the world.

Did anyone watch "The Untamed"? It was released only a few months ago and quickly became the most rated drama of all time on Douban Chinese ratings website.
