Korean soap operas now are much much less popular they they were a decade ago, Chinese dramas now dominate China and becomes popular in south east Asian countries, that's the general trend.

Much less popular? Do you even look at the statistics? Even your leaders and their family watch them nowadays, and you have Korean boybands making waves in the US and meeting Trump. Don't you surf English websites and interact with the rest of the world?

Popular in SEA lol. Based on what? Some historical dramas popular in Vietnam once in a while? Go see how it compares when it comes to fan-meeting or concert tour for a Chinese star and a Korean star. Heck, I would say that Korean stars are far more popular than Chinese stars even in majority ethnic Chinese Singapore, much less other SEA countries. I know no one of my generation (including Chinese-speaking) who watches Chinese dramas/movies/variety shows, maybe only a couple who listen to Chinese songs. Even my Dad who is Chinese-educated watches Korean dramas nowadays.

If you don't believe, come to Singapore or Malaysia and ask the ethnic Chinese whether they have heard of Chinese stars which you think are popular. Then do the same for Korean stars.

I know the Chinese members here will just post some bullshit article about how global opinion of the US is lower.

I can see that beijingwalker is tempting to quote some article about Yanxi Palace being the most Googled show or some YouTube videos of Vietnamese girl watching Chinese historical dramas to show that Chinese dramas are popular.

it's because, culturally, Vietnam is heavily influenced by China from thousand years ago. Whenever I watch Chinese movies/drama/novels, I can somehow relate it to Vietnam's history, situation, behavior...
What makes a Chinese laugh while watching Chinese drama, is most likely makes a Vietnamese laugh, too. Because I think it's applicable in my case, too, culturally speaking.

Mostly because they can relate to Chinese culture and because they were introduced to it from a young age.

I grew up watching ancient Chinese dramas with my grandma. As a little girl I loved the hairstyle and fancy dresses of those Chinese princesses and noble girls even though I did not understand much about the storyline. Because which little girl doesn't like long princess dresses, dangly jewelleries and fancy hair?

And the Chinese dramas that my grandma likes to watch have a lot of princesses, queens, empresses and rich beautiful women with fancy dresses, servants and beautiful houses. They have a rule for everything, including how to drink tea, what to say, how to kneel when you meet your superior. I was fascinated with these stuff, as was many of my friends. We used to tear down our curtains and wrapped ourselves in blankets to achieve the Chinese princess look.

Think Barbie - The princess and the pauper or the Tudors (but multiply by 10). Except there are at least 5 princesses, 10 queens to obsess over in Chinese dramas

Another category of Chinese dramas that I was exposed to when young was Chinese fairies dramas. Again which little girl doesn't love fairies and magic?

When I was a little older, I discovered that the dialogs in Chinese dramas are much deeper, more complicated than in American movies. The characters are full of plots and hidden intentions. The characters are much more evil and cunning. Vietnamese just love these Chinese style dialogs, where meaning is implied rather than expressed. My mother would just play a Chinese drama and listen to it while she cooks.

Chinese dramas also have a lot of ancient proverbs which are used in everyday Vietnamese, because Vietnamese borrowed them from Chinese. So when watching a drama, Vietnamese find the dialogs very entertaining, because it is full of poetry.

Chinese dramas also appeal to everyone in society. Because women love palace dramas, men love kungfu and war dramas and children love things like the Monkey King. Overall because of the cultural similarities, Vietnamese are very receptive to Chinese cultural products. Even Chinese traditional music is very popular and well liked

In fact, we very much enjoy Chinese dramas, movies, novels and even calligraphy. As a matter of history, our culture and way of life have been heavily influenced by the Chinese more than any countries in South East Asia even Singapore due to nearly 1000 years of its rule.

In terms of culture, traditions, social norms and expectations, China and Vietnam have a lot in common. That's why Vietnamese people can relate to Chinese dramas and movies.

China's soft power is absolute shit in comparison. It's the result of Low EQ. Just look at most of the Chinese members here. China has absolutely no idea how to effectively get their message across to non-Chinese members in a way that can build genuine affection, trust and inspiration from others.

Many Western youths I interact with online have watched or at least heard of Japanese anime such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Pokemon etc. Sometimes in a group conversation they would bring in anime references or memes.

Or maybe there's a selective bias, those who are actively online on forums or games are more likely to watch anime and therefore doesn't represent the larger population who aren't online actively.
