It has been known for a while that the Indian military will shortly be on board for a far bigger number of attack helicopters than it has ever operated before, there are finally numbers on the table. Livefist can now confirm that India has an express requirement of 39 additional AH-64 Apaches, over and above the 22 originally contracted in September last year. The requirement has been officially defined by the Indian MoD and communicated to Boeing. Of the 39, the first 11 will be options locked to the original contract, with the same price and configuration. The additional 28 will be a freshly negotiated government-to-government contract that could include configuration changes. These new figures also provide the first fleet numbers that the Apache will sport in Indian service: 33 with the Indian Air Force (22 contracted + 11 options at 2009 price) and 28 with the Indian Army. Sources say the additional contract for 28 aircraft could be signed before deliveries of the the original 22 begin in 2019.

The stated numbers are interesting and effectively mean the Indian military is looking at operating roughly four attack helicopter squadrons split between the IAF and Army (the IAF technically operates two squadrons of the Mi-25/35 now, though availability means numbers closer to a single squadron at any given time, or less). While the two services haven’t fully cleared up differences in command and control — the Army still insists on full control of battlefield air assets to the exasperation of the IAF — there hasn’t been any real doctrinal “settlement” on how things will move operationally forward. Livefist learns that an existing document specifically detailing the use of attack helicopters between the IAF and Army will be refreshed and updated before deliveries to the IAF begin in 2019.

In September last year, India signed up after protracted negotiations for 22 AH-64E Apaches, half of which will be Longbows. The Boeing-Tata manufacturing joint venture that’s coming up in Hyderabad will deliver the first Indian-built Apache fuselage in 2018, and will service standing orders for at least 200 new airframes for Boeing’s customers around the world. When ready, it will be the world’s sole global supplier of Apache fuselages

The difference between the LCH and Apache at high altitudes is going to be in maneuverability. The LCH will turn out to be more agile and have higher performance in general because it is custom-designed to fight at higher altitudes. The Apache, on the other hand, is a brute-force machine, matching the LCH up to the Himalayas for payload, but losing out in agility. The Apache will be less agile than the LCH but will take more hits and keep flying. Where the LCH will look to evade and survive, the Apache will turn to its armor.

LCH is even Better then Apache then why India is buying Apache ??

Instead of LCH India looking for Apache
instead of Tejas India Looking for F-16's and Gripen
Instead of Arjun Tank India is going for T-90's

not trolling just asking

There is no "Instead". There is a defined role for every type of armament. Comparing a helicopter from the light wight category with the heavy weight is an attempt in futile.

LCH was made or a idea of LCH was concieved after india struggeled for a dedicated offensive roatarry winged offensive/anty personal/bunker/tank aircraft during kargil which could safely avoid MANPADS SAMS hence the LCH was born which is designed to carry 48 rockets or 2X4 air to air missiles or 2X4 ATGM with full feul and two pilots till a fighting altitude of 6.5Km and perform any kind of attack while the best MANPAD SAM in the world have a flieght cieling of 4Km now go figure yourself about why LCH is so important for our army in himalayas

every Apache will be escorted by 2-3 LCH or in a wing there would 1 apache plus 2-3 LCH

as for tejas 100 tejas already orderred and production already started F16 nagociation and production will start only after 2019 till then three assembelly lines of LCA will be working in full steamplus LCA is a point defence internal air policing role fighter with limited precission bombing cabality where as F16Blk 70/72 is a first strike /SEAD/DEAD/CAS/pricission /carpate-bombing capable medium heavy omni role fighter

as for Arjun its a heavy MBT while T90 is a medium wieght so care to google the use of heavy tanksd and there ratio of numbers versus those of regualr medium weight world wide you will get your answer ..... cheers mate

nstead of LCH India looking for Apache
Apache More than a Most Mature Machine LCH Will Take 5 years To reach that Sophistication Is terns operations
also PayLoad and Technology gap Though IAF,IA Ordered Rudra to Fill that gap in CAS Role
instead of Tejas India Looking for F-16's and Gripen
India has to Replace 42-44 Squadrons that Include Medium Category to Long range ground Attack Aircrafts Gripen E and F-16 and F-18 are options

Also in future india will Require 200 aircrafts for its 3-4 AC's Fleets by 2027 F-18 and Rafale M is Best choice for Long Range carrier based fighter Along with F-35
Instead of Arjun Tank India is going for T-90's
Same goes Like Arjun it has Its Problems of logistics and india Need two replace its 2400 T-72 tanks by 2030 So More T-90MS and AFV are Procured Fill that need

Thanks All.. :cheers::cheers: quiet informative

The article states that half of the apaches in the 22 being procured will be longbows. Does that mean half will be AH-64D and the other half being AH-64E?

LCH do not have enough punch to support "Cold Start". Apache will be used as 'spear head' and LCH as support/secondary role. Apache are purchased to operate in the plains of Punjab and Rajasthan desert not on mountains.

Longbow is a Radar and avionics suite designed for Special ops
all models will be AH-64E but only 12 will carry Longbow system, same goes with the follow on order where 20 will carry the Longbow Radar while rest will be standard AH-64E

Our love for foreign maal. :cheesy:

Instead of LCH India looking for Apache
They are not quite in the same category nor would their roles be the same. I don't think Apaches would fly in the Himalaya's

instead of Tejas India Looking for F-16's and Gripen

Tejas is already flying. Mk1.A or Mk2 will & should be the Gripen LCA combine.
F-16 buy is going to be a combination of keeping a newly found strategic partner happy & at the same time beefing up numbers. In my opinion PAF would be happy with this. Now you can look at other jets. J16 maybe.

Instead of Arjun Tank India is going for T-90's
350+ on order.

There is no such thing as heavy , medium MBT, in IA both Arjun and T90 performs role of Main battle tank.

There is always been heavy, medium and light Cavalry.(read tank as they are modern cavalry units)
T90 are tip of the spear head in IA and T-72 will widen the cut caused by T-90.

But, there is always a counter strategy, which is to attack on corner of the spear head.

you must protect the corner for swift attack(read cold start), Apaches are being inducted for the same purpose. they can even protect advancing 'Spear head' from their tactical short range(60-80km) nuclear missile which they have developed to 'nuke Indian troops on pakistani soil)

just google armored spearhead formation and counter strategy, its been there from WW2.

https://www.scribd.com/doc/48444181/Warhammer-40k-Spearhead

read above document for the strategy.
