NEW DELHI: Hectic activity around the Rafale fighter jet deal has South Block on the edge. Barely a month is left for French President Fracois Hollande to arrive in New Delhi as the chief guest for Republic Day. India and France are expected to sign the deal for 36 Rafale aircraft in flyaway condition during the visit. Officials say technical negotiations are complete, but commercial bids are to be finalised. Negotiations to be completed by July are delayed. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) had constituted a committee headed by Air Marshal SBP Sinha to engage with the French team. “The unit price is still an issue. Efforts are being made to finalise it before the French President’s visit,” said a source. Once done, the first jet will land in India within three years with a cost hike of 2-3 per cent.
