Mitterand makes me wonder, What if N.S. or I.K. recognized the Jewish State of Israel tomorrow?

Tonight's reading was about former French President Francois Mitterand:

A very deceiving and accomplished center-leftist, early in his political career he faked an assassination attempt on his life, was discovered, and yet his career recovered.

As PM he co-opted the French Communists to better marginalize them.

He encouraged and empowered U.S. president Ronald Reagan to undertake acts of economic sabotage in the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

He threw a tantrum in Washington to establish the rule that the cuisine served by the White House should never be superior to the cuisine served at the Champs Elyssés.

After a few years as PM he made a complete reversal of economic policy, from an emphasis on state planning to "l'austere", the opening of free markets - since he couldn't get socialism to work.

All while he kept the cancer that eventually killed him a state secret from his own countrymen.

The French accepted all this - they even savoured the changes! What can I say? The French are not Americans.

The French aren't Pakistanis, either, but the Mitterrand story set me to wondering, what if Nawaz Sharif or Imran Khan decided to totally change their outlook and recognize Israel tomorrow? What would the reactions of Pakistanis be? Would some support their leadership? Would there be mass demonstrations on the street? Would there be a sense of relief and quiet support that Pakistan had finally begun to regain its sanity? Or would people remain quiet because, like after OBL was discovered, the primary feeling would be one of utter shock?

Israel and Pakistan worked together when the respective country leaders were extremists...I can see Khan with a pragmatic future Israeli leader engage in thawing the bilateral relations...The street is conditioned by the political apparatus not the other way around...

Really? I suppose that with the passage of the PPO ordinary Pakistanis still have no protection to dissent while it's now safer for politicians to exercise new thoughts and initiatives.

I hope you don't mean by "pragmatic" "willing to dissolve the State of Israel and legitimize Jew-killing to appease the Arabs". Because imo that's the sort of Jew Pakistanis currently consider to be "pragmatic."

Ahhh.... Solomon2, give up already.

Pakistan is not likely to accept Israel until Palestinians are seen to have been given their due. KSA has to accept Israel first. Even then there would be some in Pakistan who would not accept recognition of Israel.

On its own, and by itself Pakistan would not accept Israel. You are wasting your efforts.

What's all the fuss about @Solomon2 ?

It's not you Jews/Israelis (you are an American never mind) that are living in mostly dire conditions and in some case isolation (GAZA) but the Palestinians. So what's all this crying for?

Not only that you got the support of the whole Western world and most world powers. Yet that is not enough. You are receiving aid, donations and all the favors of the world that Palestinians can only dream about.

Congratulations with your tiny land. Let the Palestinians have their own share and then let this tiring conflict end. The world is fed up by this nonsense.

Yet keep creating 10-15 new threads monthly about the conflict. Always from the same one-sided perspective.

You Israelis and Palestinians surely know how to make peace and compromises don't you?

I know of dozens of Europeans and Americans who are extremely tired of being part of this conflict directly and indirectly. Muslims and Arabs as well to your great surprise probably.

I know that you love nothing more than to demonize and play the moral card but most of the world look at contempt at both parties as troublemakers who are yet to make peace 67 years after. And yes, Israelis are as much to blame for that as Palestinians.

The solution for Israel to be recognized by most Muslim countries hinges on the right to Palestinian to have their own state...I mean a state not a semblant of state with restrictions and guidelines...
If Israel find the political courage to agree to a Palestinian state, the most Muslim anti Israel states will be the first one to welcome full diplomatic and commercial relation with Israel...
