For combat edge over Pakistan, India needs only one to two squadrons.

For combat edge over BDesh or S Lanka, 3 planes.

For combat edge over Nepal, one

For combat edge over China, 126 won't cut it. India probably will need double that number.

Bottom line: get 2 squadrons from France. Buy 200+ from Russia and still save money.

Why do you think Pakistan wants to buy helicopters from Russia? Cheaper and decent performers.

RAFALE deal is worth at most 22 Billion USD if India exercises all its options
PAKFA/FGFA deal is worth 35 Billion USD for 216 Aircrafts
If the Ruskies screw up the PAKFA, then India would have no option but to order 63 additional Rafales , WHICH will reduce PAKFA order to 144

not gonna happen
india is not gonna use the Rafale against Nato
they are meant to replace Mig27 and Jaguars

Russian planes are costlier than Western planes when life cycle cost id taken in account. This was the reason that MMRCA tender was floated, else IAF was happy with MKI. MKI is a maintenance whore.
