Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh): The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli have booked five persons for allegedly setting the house of a Hindu man on fire. Reports said Dev Prakash Patel’s house located at Atapur Rataso village in Raebareli’s Salon police station area was torched on Sunday afternoon.

Patel alleged that his house was torched because he had converted to Hinduism from Islam last year. Prior to embracing Hinduism, Patel was known by the name Mohammed Anwar.

Patel has blamed two village pradhans for the attack on his house. He alleged that the village pradhans along with their men set his house on fire and tried to burn him as well as his three children alive for converting to Hinduism.

According to Patel, the pradhans and several other influential Muslims in the village were not happy with his move to embrace Hinduism last year. Ever since, they had decided to punish him for his action.

It was reported that the victim along with his children saved their lives by escaping from the burning house through the back door.

A police team and a fire tender had rushed to the spot after receiving information about the fire and doused the blaze later.

In the case registered by the police, the village pradhans have been named along with three others. Two of the suspects have already been arrested.

Speaking to Times Now, Patel named two of the accused - Ali Ahmed and Tahir, both pradhans - and alleged: “When we were converting to Hinduism, the accused had tried to stop us and managed to impress upon my wife not to embrace the religion. Ever since she has been staying at her maternal home.”

He added: “I never expected these people to go to this length. I was threatened earlier but had not reported the threat to police.”
