What's new

Minstry of defence clears military projects worth over Rs 12,000 crore!!!

Because BMP-2 despite it's vintage is an extremely reliable machine. We also have Licensed the BMP 2 platform- Sarath, so we can pretty much do whatever we want to do with the platform, right from putting the 105 mm SB gun/ to the garuda platform, to Pechoras, Akash, NBC, Medivac, RCL Guns, Large Mortar, what ever we please to do with it. Next OFB has been working with this platform for a long time so we have the capability to build the required adapters application end changes. Due to an extensive inventory- it provides us ease of logistics for maintaining spares, consumables, training of technicians and field repair crew is simplified.

The advantages of maintaining a BMP-2 outweighs what BMP-3 brings to the table.

Pardon my Ignorance

T-72 chasis could be converted to IFV, Invest on LAH, Rudra rather than on tank for modern war.
BMP-2 is pretty old design, have vunrability even against rocket launcher from front and lower from mines. Only thing I found it useful is the platform for Akash, and Medic unit. Even for Akash wheeled platfor from Ashok Leyland is there.
Arjun-2 is available, but I will prefer Aerial Armour rather than wheeled.

10^7 = 1 crore = 10 Mn
10^9 = 100 crore = 1 arab = 1 Billion
10^11 = 100 arab = 1 kharab = 100 Bn
10^13 = 100 kharab = 1 neel = 10 Trillion
10^15 = 100 neels = 1 padm = 1 quadrillion
10^17 = 100 padm = 1 shankh = 100 Quadrillion
10^18 = 10 shankh = 1 gulshan = 1 quintillion

The number system of India based on vedic system versus western numeral system
notice a difference of a zero 10^7 vs 10^6 or 10^10 vs 10^9. Thats the major difference. A power of a zero...
mostly indian English carry max to crores and not go beyond this... rarely Mainstream carries arab kharab neel padm shankhs...

We cant leave whatever our forefathers invented outright and hence u see more of Bn and trillions beyond bigger numerals then crores.
Amazingly Why did Vedic people need such big value at that time, definately not for the money count ?

i can just imagine a conversation going like this." i'm buying some defence equipment for about 120 arabs, give or take one or two"

its fairly simple. usually Crore is used which is 10 Million

So remember only one 100 Crore ----> 1 Billion Thats all.

NEW DELHI: The defence ministry on Thursday cleared new military modernisation proposals worth over Rs 12,000 crore, ranging from the acquisition of two additional regiments of the indigenous Pinaka multiple-launch rocket systems to the upgrade of 26 Ilyushin transport aircraft by Russia.

In terms of cost, the largest proposal to be cleared by the Manohar Parrikar-chaired defence acquisitions council (DAC) was the Rs 4,250 crore one to upgrade the Ilyushin fleet with new engines and avionicsto extend their service life by another 20 years.

The IAF has 14 IL-76 transport aircraft, three Israeli Phalcon AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) mounted on IL-76s and six IL-78 mid-air refuellers. Then, there are three IL-76s deployed with the Aviation Research Centre, which are also operated by the IAF.

The DAC also "amended" the ''acceptance of necessity" (AoN) granted for the production of 363 BMP-II infantry combat vehicles by the Ordnance Factory Board under licence from Russia at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore. The modified AoN - which signifies the approval for theprocurement process to kick off -- is now for the acquisition of 149 BMP-IIs at a cost of Rs 924 crore for the Army. Both these decisions come just a day before Parrikar leaves for a visit to Russia on Friday evening.

The DAC also cleared two more Pinaka MLRS regiments for the Army, at a cost of Rs 3,306 crore, to add to the two such regiments the force already has to plug gaps in its medium-range, high-volume firepower. With a strike range of 40-km, the Pinaka MLRS are manufactured by the Tatas and L&T based on technology developed by DRDO.

The Navy, in turn, will get four new multi-purpose vessels at a cost of Rs 2,800 crore to replace its old ocean-going tugs. The AoN for the long-pending Rs 1,500 crore project to buy two deep-submergence rescue vessels (DSRVs) was also extended by the DAC. The Navy has been pushing for DSRVs - which "mate" with stricken submarines at depths over 500 metres to rescue trapped sailors -- for well over a decade now but are still nowhere near getting them.

The Rs 1,800 crore case for "digitization" of 25 firing units of the Pechora surface-to-air missile system was also approved by the DAC. This will ensure that the ageing Pechora system, which has a range of 30-km, can be used by the IAF for another decade or so.
What happend to make in India? Anyway, how much is 12,000 crore in dollars?

should be around $1.83 Billion, Make in India will take time, give 5-10 years for the industries to come up. For the moment, local private companies are being given contracts and these companies are expanding their manufacturing base.

It is bloody criminal the MoD has allowed the IN to go without this critical capability for such a long time.

Dada,do you have any idea why on earth did the MoD give green signal to the purchase of an additional 363 BMP-2K IFV when it's a known fact that these are totally obsolete by today's standard:undecided:!!I wonder why didn't they go for the upgraded BMP-3 version having a 57mm cannon and added armor protection:rolleyes:!!
A reflection of the counter productive rules and red tape- it is far easier to go for follow-on units of existing equipment (no matter how outdated) then go for a new product. An entirely new product would require an open tender under "buy and make India" which would go on for years. As the IA is gearing up for FICV 2.0 these new BMP-2Ks will address their critical requirements.

@MilSpec has covered this fully- 70% of this is Make in India.

T72 chasis conversion to IFV> Will cost money, won't bring any significant advantage, will take away viable offensive armor platforms for conversion. It's a step backwards.

BMP2> 90% locally produced back in 90's, close to 100% now, Sarath is an cost effective plaform, and has good logistical supply chain, maintainability service rate, and wide variety of applications.

With the exception of BMP 1/2 recce garud units, these guys are second tier Armor coming after the T90/t72 platforms.

Armour is being upgraded on the BMP 2- especially on recce/recovery/engineering units.

Next is preference, When the collective intelligence of the armed forces is behind a certain initiative, it is futile to even consider your or mine counter opinion. These are the guys on the ground fighting, if they want BMP2's that's what they will get, irrespective of you and me imagining A10 Thunders for the same role.

And btw, without air superiority, ALH and Rudra's are not even coming close to doing what you envisage. But even without air superiority - You can have armor movement- as long as you have CAP running to counter enemy CAS/FAS or Air Interdiction packages.

just my 2 cents.

good and logical answer, one offtopic question for an expert like you

Its clear that LCA if shelfed 6-10 percentage of over wt would attain the desired ASQR of IAF, ADA are confidence in shelving ~1000-900 kg. The option what I can predict are removal of 200 kg ballast, overwt reduction by making the overwt parts lighter. Heard that the landing gear is over wt due to ADA using the safety factor of 3.5 instead of normal which i think is 2.5, so if the factor is 2.5 KG how much wt can be reduced say landing gear wt is 1.5 ton.
And any idea how reduction can be achieved.

Dada,i have heard from a friend of mine who is posted in the Army that a large no. of retd. T-55s are being converted into Tarmour heavy APC with Samson automatic weapons station.Unfortunately,i couldn't get a single pic out there but my friend tells me that these APCs are extremely well protected and offers substantial increase in capability of the mechanized infantry corp.

Look up Project Gulmoher -
This was the project assigned for overhauling the T55 tanks in Khadki Pune. 1000 T55 tanks were overhauled and provied life extension to serve till 2015. The install involved complete overhaul, up gunning the system to 105 mm. ARDE has successfully developed the 105 mm Fin Stabilized Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FSAPDS) ammunition for the Vijayanta and Up-Gunned T-55 MBTs.

As far as the IFV version of the T55 is concerned, I will be quite surprised that, IA might have gone into pilot program of may be doing a feasibility analysis for something based on the Israeli Achzarit T55 based IFV, if you are referring to the Tarmour platform, I don't really see a bright future for that, that thing is buck ugly, but maybe with 1000 platforms sitting, something can be done to like the image below.
