Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Saturday said none will be allowed to play with the fate of the people, mentioning that military power grabbers cannot do welfare of a country, reports UNB.

"There is no instance in the world that a military government worked for the welfare of a country," she said at a civic reception accorded to her by national citizen committee for wining the maritime boundary case against Myanmar.

Hasina said some people think that the power is a place for gratification while some feel it is an opportunity to serve the people.

"We feel that people have installed us in power and we are grateful to them. And for that we work for their wellbeing," she told the function organised at the South Plaza of the Sangsad Bhaban.

The prime minister said the present government has freed the country from the clutches of militancy and 'Bangla Bhai' and ensured democracy and fundamental rights of the people so that the Bangalees can stand in the comity of the nations with their heads high.

Recalling the past democratic movements, she said: "We fought for democracy to establish a state where people of all religious faiths will enjoy equal rights. We fought for democracy to establish a country free from hunger and poverty."

She added: "We struggled for democracy, and democracy was established through our struggle."

Hasina said: "I've nothing to gain. I'm the daughter of Father of the Nation. I want to sacrifice my life like my father."

She added: "I'm ready to make any sacrifice for the interest of the people. I'm not scared of death. I only wish to work for the people."

Referring to the establishment of Bangladesh's legitimate right in the Bay of Bengal, the prime minister said mineral and marine resources in the Bay would be utilised for the advancement of the country through democratic dispensation.

"The door of opportunity has been opened through the victory against Myanmar," she said, expressing the hope that Bangladesh will also win the maritime boundary case against India in 2014.

Hasina said: "If people keep their trust in us and reelect us to power, we firmly believe we will win the case against India too."

Chaired by Dr Zillur Rahman Siddique, chairman of the national citizen reception committee, the function was also addressed among others by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, National Professor Dr MR Khan, artist Quayum Chowdhury, DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique and economist Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman.

Eminent litterateur Syed Shamsul Huq read out the citation dedicated to the prime minister.

After the prime minister's speech, a cultural show was presented by noted artists at the reception.
