The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has accepted delivery of the country’s first domestically developed air defense system, a statement from defense contractor ASELSAN said on Wednesday.

According to the announcement the system, which is called Kaideye Monteli Stinger (KMS), was delivered to the military at a ceremony also attended by head of the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM) Murad Bayar. He said the KMS project is pioneering for the defense industry in many respects while also acknowledging the kind of difficulties faced in its preparation. “All related discussions were very difficult, but thank God the project was eventually started. As of today, it has become a perfect product,” he noted.

The KMS is an all-computerized high-tech air defense system that uses Stinger missiles as firepower. The project was launched in 1989. In his remarks mentioned in the statement, Bayar also elaborated on how important a goal it is for his undersecretariat to be able to supply more domestic products to the country’s military. “Now the Turkish defense industry has come to a certain point in terms of both production and design. When we were first discussing this [KMS] project, national design really was an exception. Now procuring final goods from overseas has become the exception. Thanks to the technology we obtained to finish this project, we’ve actually already built tank fire control systems, remote control weapons systems and other air defense systems. All these projects take their roots from KMS,” he said. “We are carrying out more than 100 projects today. Just imagine what is going to happen 20 years from now,” he added.

ASELSAN Chairman Necmettin Baykal, also present at the ceremony according to the statement, said the company produced 18 KMS systems for the Royal Dutch Army and that their clients have been very pleased with the product.

Aselsan bags national missile system contract

Turkey’s leading military electronics company Aselsan and the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries, or SSM, have signed two major contracts for the development of indigenous low and medium altitude air defence missile systems, the company revealed in a special press release on Monday.

Request for proposal for the low level air defence system (T-LALADMIS) was first issued by SSM in September 2008, and entails the procurement of 18 self-propelled, armored air defence systems, support and training equipment, maintenance tools, spare parts and other relevant services and documents required for the efficient operation of the systems. An option also exists for 27 additional such systems in the immediate future.

Also awarded to Aselsan is a medium-range air defence system development program, dubbed T-MALADMIS, and it entails direct procurement of one medium altitude air defense missile system composed of one battalion headquarters and headquarters company and three batteries, each of which has a sufficient amount of launchers, missiles, radars, command-control and communication systems and other support equipment.

Cost of Aselsan’s T-LALADMIS program design and development is 314,920,445 EURO, while T-MALADMIS amounts to 241,392,218 EURO.

cabatli one question, those old m113s looks quite useful for that kind of works, are we producing them ourselves or just using the ones from inventory ?

As far as I know the M-113's used as a base for Aselsan KMS platforms are being selected from Turkish Army's inventory.

A domestic base vehicle would be better I think, m113 inventory is limited and old after all.

Actually this is the smart thing to do. M113s are originally an APC but it is getting out of service but it still works and moves. You need a delivery system instead of an APC you get the M113s to do it. So it is a cost effective measure.

M-113: 12 tonnes
FNSS ACV-300: 14 tonnes
FNSS Akıncı: 18 tonnes
FNSS New Generation IFV: 30 tonnes
Altay MBT: 60-65 tonnes

At present, FNSS is developing 30 tonnes new generation IFV which will be a rival of German PUMA and British Cv-90 at markets. At first phase, Chassis of new IFV will be used for Aselsan Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun system and Aselsan Low Altitude Otonom SAM's and Later, 30 tonnes IFV will fill the gaps between 60 tonnes Altay MBT and 15-20 tonnes tracked Armoured vehicles in Turkish armed Forces inventory...

New IFV chassis mainly used for Spaag and Aselsan otonom SAM. (Note: 3D images have been prepared with FNSS Akinci chassis)
