ISLAMABAD: The top US military official conveyed his "most sincere condolences" to Pakistan's army chief Thursday, over a fatal cross-border Nato strike that strained relations between the countries.

"We take this incident very seriously," Admiral Mike Mullen said in a letter to Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, the US embassy said.

"I wanted to send my most sincere condolences for the regrettable loss of your soldiers killed and wounded on 30 September near your border with Afghanistan."

Mullen said senior commanders would review an investigation into the incident thoroughly in the hope of "avoiding recurrence of a tragedy like this."

"The death of our soldiers in combat is always tragic, but under these circumstances, it is even more difficult to accept," he said.

The letter was made public a day after US ambassador Anne W. Patterson issued an apology for the incident last Thursday in which a cross-border Nato chopper strike killed at least two Pakistani soldiers mistaken for militants

Although it’s a regrettable and sad incidence but we should take note that its not easy to apologise or say sorry for a mistake for anyone. Especially for the sole super power it’s a big deal.
Lets move on and hope that better command & control and communication prevents anything from happening in the future
And if any such incursion does happen then the NATO forces are not that trigger happy. It would help if they finish off any “escaping” militants within Afghanistan instead of waiting and “hot perusing” them into another country.
The other issue is the trust. There are some scripted media announcements about how this strategic partnership is valued but still the media keeps bringing up stories of mistrust and hidden agendas which is further strengthened by such incidents.

The only winning party in this misfortune are the terrorist s hell bent on making the lives of hundreds of millions of the people of this region specially and the rest of the world in general a misery. So hopefully the good sense prevails and good measures are put in place to avoid the episode from playing again.

I think if anything happens again then there will be no option but to cease the partnership and “aggressively” defend the air and ground territory, in order to justify the claim of sovereignty and hefty defence budget.

U.S. has to do more to protect Pakistan's interest in the region.

U.S. needs to respect Pakistan's interests and work for mutual benefit with Pakistan.

U.S. needs to respect the lives of Pakistani troops and Pakistani civilians.

U.S. needs to cooperate more with Pakistan in this war.

U.S. needs Pakistan more than any other country on earth for winning the war in Afghanistan.
