Groundbreaking of Unique Acropolis
Unique Acropolis is expected to be one of the tallest skyscrapers in Bangladesh and the second-tallest building in Dhaka, one story shy of City Center in Dilkhusha. It is located on Gulshan Avenue, in the commercial centre of Dhaka. It is planned to be completed by mid-2017. The tower will have serviced apartments, a Hyatt Hotel, 7 level basement parking and office spaces.

I don't know if such comparisons make sense other than the mudslinging that pleases a few. Maybe design wise there could be something to learn. Bangladesh-e highrise kora extremely difficult because base-rock is very deep and piling costs become prohibitive. So Kolkata will have way more taller highrises than Dhaka.

That thread is more or less free of mudslinging, and also has nice photos!! :)

That is a great thread. However I don't see a whole lot of midrises (other than Alipore Newtown for the IT campuses and some malls). Any link other than that thread for the latest avant garde stuff would be quite welcome.

What is the traditional way of building a house in Dacca. In Lahore we used "gara chunna" and there is an organization which has started building luxury homes in that way. Keeping in view the extreme weather these homes are cool in summer and are comfortable in winters.

Google Kamil Khan Mumtaz, if u want to learn more about it.

Well, Gara Chunna is known as Chuna-Soorki over here.

The modern way of building a multistory residential house (condominium complex) and/or an office building up to sixteen floors or so. now in Dhaka is Concrete/RCC skeleton/RCC floors with Cemented Brick walls on the exterior while using lightweight terracotta cemented brick walls on the interior. Sometimes for commercial structures, as seen on these pages, the outside veneer is epoxy-coated painted Galvanized steel sheet or simply, thick reinforced glass. Sometimes 'Face' brick is common veneer locally, as in the National Parliament Building.

For interior walls Gypsum board covered with metal or concrete studs skeleton is slowly being adopted as they are lighter in weight than lightweight brick. If you go above sixteen floors for a Modern building then a Steel-beam skeleton with cast-in-situ RCC floor/ceiling starts to make better sense as steel skeleton is cheaper and lighter at that point.

The traditional way to build structures in the last century (up to 1947) in Dhaka (for buildings up to three or so stories) was to build massive beams and ceilings (much thicker than present day practice) with a mixture of Chuna (Lime) + Soorki (Mortar) with heavy Cast Iron beams (akin to Railroad beams) to hold up the ceiling (since 1800's). This had largely remained the same urban building technique across the subcontinent since Mughal times (1200 AD onward). And you're right - this lime-mortar (Chuna-Soorki) structures are comfortable in both summer and winter. The problem is lowering of Earthquake-proof structural strength which is a sacrifice unfortunately.

I tried to go to KKM architects site but that site is closed. His Facebook page is still open. Interesting conservationism effort.

Although not showing a lot of midrises - general idea of the cityscape in the Dhaka suburbs near Cantonment area.
