Middle route of China's mega diversion project moves over 40 billion cubic meters of water

"The water supply guarantee rate for recipient cities along the central route has increased from less than 75 percent to above 95 percent, benefiting more than 20 large and medium-sized cities and 131 counties along the route.

About 13 million residents in Beijing benefit from this project, which provides more than 70 percent of the water supply in the city's main urban areas. The middle route has provided 5.9 billion cubic meters of water to 48 rivers in the north for ecological restoration.

This water diversion project saved Beijing, before this project, the hottest topic in China was where China should move the nation's capital to, the city's underground water was dried up, it was a matter of years when Beijing had no drinking water available. Such discussion hasn't been heard of ever since the completion of this project, Beijing now has more than enough water, underground water has been fully replenished and reached record high, Since then Beijing started to build water parks , man made lakes and canals all over the city.
Now Beijing is almost like a water city.

Why were Desalination plants not made as Beijing is nearer to sea, so would have been more feasible?

Beijing has tens of millions of people, Desalination is expensive and can't provide nearly enough for the demand. diversion water is cheap and in abundance.

This one is so massive, even they successfully replenish groundwater around Beijing Area.

Desalination plant cannot do that

And for long term, the Operation cost for this one are much lower than Desalination plant

It save Beijing Aquifer from depletion. For a long time, Beijing draws more than it can replenish. While today, Beijing still draw from aquifer, output is less than input.

Hence the water table rises.

I have did a rough calculation. 50% of Brahmaputra tap at bend area to Xinjiang will make China soy self sufficient.

And basically that solve the problem of delicious food security. 解决吃得好
