NEW DELHI: BJP on Tuesday lashed out at home minister P Chidambaram for his remarks that the middle class is ready to pay for mineral water and ice cream but can't bear an increase of Re 1 in price of wheat and rice, saying he has shown insensitivity towards them and ridiculed them.

"It seems that Mr Chidambaram has inappropriately made a scandalous remark against the middle class and is ridiculing them. BJP would treat this remark as a complete hate statement reflecting the inner contradictions of the government itself," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He claimed that while the government has failed to deliver and rein in prices, control inflation or find a way out of the economic mess, the home minister has chosen to "torment the hapless common man".

Rudy termed Chidambaram's statement as bizarre. "This stinks of complete insensitivity and BJP completely deplores the words of Mr Chidambaram. But at the same time nothing better is expected from this government and its ministers," he said.

Another BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said Chidambaram does not understand the pain of the common man as he is confined to "air-conditioned rooms and flying in planes". "Chidambaram and the Congress are far removed from the common man. His comments are a joke on the people in a country where 50-60 crore live below the poverty line," he said.

Condemning the statement, Hussain demanded that Chidambaram tender an apology.

No buddy, this moron Chuddu is wrong.
I dont understand how eating an ice cream for rs 10-15 is going to suggest that people are unaffected by the price ris.
And how many people in middle class can even afford a Endeavor or a Fortuner.

First let him explain his government's impotency in proper distribution and storage of food grains, then he can bark as loud as his vocal cord permits. :hitwall:

He doesn't have the authority to question the spending of an average middle class citizen. They're earning their money by their hard work, not from corruption. And every fooking thing is taxed, so they more a middle class will spend, the more excise duty he pays to the government.

Here the Question is not only about Middle Class India has a Population of about 35% Below Poverty Which is Much Higher then the Upper Middle Class ... & even in Middle Class there Lower Middle Class Most of Indian Middle Class Population Belongs to Lower Middle Class which according to Government static People who earn 100rs per day...

& then there is a Another Class who is Just Above the Poverty Line who according to the Government is People who earn above 35Rs a Day ...

So its effecting around 70% population of India & he is Complaining the 30% for Having Ice Cream & Mineral water ...

You have no idea, millions of tonnes of food grains gets wasted every year. Distributing them for free to the poors can eradicate malnutrition problem by more than 60%.

He is right to an Extent . There is too much hypocrisy in it . But what will chiddi baba do for ppl who cant afford mineral water and ice cream and are worried about 1rs price rise

.
His job is not to tell people what to eat or how to eat.

His job is to afford the consumers the lowest prices... if instead he goes on a rant about people's eating habits... he should quit his job and start giving out dietary advice...

same story in pakistan too, need to improve the storage godowns, its ot like we cant ptoduce enough to eliminate the hunger. wheat can still be kept under such conditions but other quickly rotting food gets too much wasted like vegetables etc

I read somewhere that malnutrition is not caused by the lack of food, but the lack of balanced diet.

And what even more ironic is Indian agricultural production growth is 3-4 times than our population growth, yet we failed to address malnutrition and starvation problem.

Aur vote de Congress ko. :hitwall:

Going by than criteria, even i'm malnourished. Malnutrition is a collective term.

Starvation: Hope govt conducts a proper survey and not depend on the NGOs to get their information. One likes it not NGOs have their own agenda. The people has the right to know what happens to the 35 kg food grains per month thats being distributed free to the poor families.

Malnutrition: Vitamin Tablets
