Microsoft unveils Surface Windows 8 tablets

Microsoft has unveiled Surface - its own-brand family of tablets.

The touchscreen computers will be powered by its upcoming Windows 8 system and contain a choice of an Intel or ARM-based processor.

It allows the firm to challenge Apple's bestselling iPad with a device that can run standard applications such as its own Office programs and Photoshop.

But it puts Microsoft in competition with other manufacturers planning to release tablets designed for Windows 8.

The company's chief executive, Steve Ballmer, said he had wanted to give the software "its own companion hardware".

The devices have 10.6 inch (26.9cm) displays, built-in kickstands and are housed in magnesium cases - which the company described as the first of their kind.

The ARM-based tablets are 9.3mm (0.4 inches) thick - slightly less than the iPad - and run the Windows RT version of the new system. The Verge reported that the chipset will be built by Nvidia.

The versions using Intel's x86 technology run Windows 8 Pro and are 13.5mm (0.5 inches) thick.

The specifications mean the Surface tablets have bigger screens than the iPad but are heavier.

Pen input

A variety of accompanying covers can be attached using built-in magnets. They double as keyboards with trackpads. One version is flat while the other offers keys that can be depressed.

The devices are also designed to work with a pen accessory using what the firm dubbed "digital ink". When the stylus is held close to the screen of the tablet it ignores touch-input from the users' hands and "samples" the ink at 600dpi (dots per inch).

The ARM-based version will be available with either 32GB (gigabytes) or 64GB of storage. Microsoft said they would be priced at a similar rate to other tablets using the same type of processor built by other firms.

It added that the Intel-based versions would be offered with either 64GB or 128GB of storage and would have price tags comparable to ultrabook laptops.

Different chipsets

One tech analyst told the BBC that other hardware makers were likely to feel aggrieved by the news.

"Microsoft can offer a competitive price for these specifications as it doesn't need to pay itself a licence for the Windows 8 software which other manufacturers will have to do, and that might make its PC and tablet-making partners unhappy," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at the technology consultants Gartner.

She added that the firm appeared to have focused on a specific part of the market which wanted a more powerful device than the iPad.

"They seem to be be targeting a professional audience," she said.

"So they are going head-to-head with Apple within the corporate sector. Price will be key - these devices won't be at the bottom end of the market. They will probably let other manufacturers fight over that space."

By contrast the tech research firm Forrester said it thought the focus for ARM-based Surface tablets would be consumers, rather than the enterprise sector.

But one of its analysts warned there was a risk customers would shy away if they found it confusing distinguishing between the two types of Windows 8 experience. This will be the first time Microsoft will offer a version of its PC system designed for chips based on ARM's architecture.

"Microsoft will be its own worst enemy in this market," blogged Sarah Rotman Epps.

"Consumers aren't used to thinking about chipsets. Choice is a key tenet of Windows, but too much choice is overwhelming for consumers. Apple gets this, and limits iPad options to connectivity, storage, and black… or white."

ARM's ambitions

Despite the potential for confusion, British chip designer ARM said it was "excited" by the news.

The firm's designs have already proved popular with smartphone makers, but Microsoft's support for its technology in Windows 8 offers it the potential to expand into a market dominated until now by Intel and AMD.

"This represents a significant milestone in Microsoft's journey to expand the support of the Windows operating system and embrace the ARM architecture," said Lance Howarth, the firm's vice president of marketing.

"With the Surface for Windows RT announcement we are delighted to see yet another example of this partnership in action which follows on from various Windows RT devices demonstrated at Taiwan's Computex show recently."

Intel could not be reached for comment.

Mr Ballmer described Surface as "a whole new community of computing devices"

Im gonna stick with 7 and Ubuntu great OS .

Give me one good i mean good reason to move to windows 8 , its fate is going to same like windows vista .

Could have given it a better name. Surface? Really? :cheesy:

Nope - Win 8 will literally destroy Android and iOS in Tablet Market.

Ubuntu will soon bring its full fledged OS in Smartphone means two OS can run at the same time . Just connect the Phone with the hub and u have a complete desktop experience .

But in tablet another competitor will jump in ring, that is Windows.

There are already two Android and IOS. Its gonna be a triple threat match when window will jump in.

Micro will lose more, if he is always too proud to please the consumer, like the IBM, NOKIA

This is going to destroy apple. I say bring it on. Overpriced and limited access apple tablets are in need of a whupping.

No information released at all, apple's Ipad 3 gives kickass resolution that no laptop can give. Video on Ipad is generations ahead.

New upcoming tabs have to be at least full HD

Functionality and enhanced access trumps flashy props. I have an ipad3 and i know just how much it sucks. All i ever want to do with it is to read e-books, which is practically a nightmare.

So i finally ended up having to jailbreak the darn thing after having busted 4 years of my savings on this overpriced junk.

Yeah my parents were real generous.

Atleast it doesn't have a name unlike ipad, sometimes embarrassing to call it infront of ladies.

Microsoft Surface is an ideal name since the Touch-UI is much fluid and smooth than any Tablet OS including iphad.

Not so fast the current Dell all in one XPS one PC has a similar resolution to Apple iMac, Not difficult to achieve and if MS comes out with the resolution better or equal to ipad 3 than what?. What we know so far about MS Surface already is steps ahead of ipad 3. There is so far nothing revolutionary about ipad 3 except for the so called retina display which is expected to be beaten by Samsung in next couple of quarters "sooner". Apple are giving slow incremental updates-upgrades many of the things have not been added not in ipad 1-2-3 that were already offered on Android Tablets for the past 3 Years so I take apple ipad as a slow moving product being sold due to the urban myth because steve jobs said so.

Surface review: Microsoft launches death of the laptop

Industry sources expect tablet to cost between Dh2,203 and Dh3,673

How much would the Microsoft’s all new laptop, sorry, the new Surface tablet cost?

Although Microsoft has not put any price estimates to what is emerging as a serious competition to both the iPad and Android-based devices, industry sources estimate the new devices could have a price tag ranging between $600 (Dh2203) to $1000 (Dh3,673).

Yesterday’s announcement of the new specs indicate that Microsoft might have finally begun the extinction of laptops with the announcement of its all-new Surface tablets?

More than being an immediate threat to Apple’s iPad, the Surface, that runs on the full Windows 8 desktop operating system would mean that you can now not only check mails and browse on a tablet but also on Excel and other Office applications with ease.

With a built-in stand and keyboard that could replicate a laptop or a notepad, the devices could be ideal for business use.

The Microsoft Surface tablet would come in two versions: the 10.6” device that weighs just 676grams and equipped with a Tegra 3 ARM-based processor that can run Windows 8 RT (ARM version).

This device will only be able to run the Windows 8 Metro applications.

The more powerful Surface Pro on the other hand weighs slightly heavier at 903 grams with a similar HD display is powered by an Intel Core i5 CPU and will run the desktop version of Windows 8, which means it works exactly like a laptop or a notebook. Not just, the Pro can even be connected to a larger display if needed.

No details have been announced as to when the new devices will be ready for shipping.

However according to industry estimates it will be before November this year.
