Have you learnt how to be happy ?
Most people don't know how to be happy and keep themselves happy.

Do you stay in gratitude all the time ?
Thankfulness is very important as it keeps humans away from anxiety and restlessness.

Psychologist helps coz he/she doesnt judge you. Your fridn's/family may judge u when u open up.
If there is a neutral person who wants to help and you can open up to him/her then that is awesome. I think everyone has one or two psychological issues atleast, due to experiences, insecurities, traumas, abuse etc in life. Some find escapes, some find distractions and very few face them and solve them. Majority of people over-think, drown in negativity, give in to their useless thoughts and finally succumb to depression.

I think most people go in depression coz its an easy way out. Its the easiest option instead of facing own thoughts, own ghosts, own negativity, own ego, own faults, own fears etc.

If you learn to accept the life that God has written for you, you won't panic. What we say in Urdu, Rab ki Raza mein Raazi ho jana. You will feel lighter and won't panic.

People who suffer from mental health don't suffer from these things because they forgot to be normal, it's illness, just like physical health. Just like with a physical ailment, rest, eating healthy, light exercise, fresh air etc will all help - you still need the medication/therapy to help you.

Brother, it depends on the client (we don't use the term patient) because meditation and mindfulness don't work on everyone and don't help everyone. Here's what a professional psychologist would do:

1. Guide you through the procedures comprehensively and make you do them with them outside of the session time to give you some training because many times bad memories may surface or anxiety may be felt.

2. Openly inform you about their expertise and what they're trained for, recommend you to someone else if they assess you need something which they're not trained to do (like specialist docs).

3. Plan out with you what each session would accomplish and at least give you a rough outline of the number of sessions that you require and explain to you why this is so, in their opinion.

If they're not doing the above mentioned then I'd recommend changing the therapist because therapy is a team effort the therapist and the client have to work together.

Hope it helps.
A relative of mine goes to see a therapist and the therapist recommends things like meditation, mindfulness, etc. These are things I feel like a quick google search can tell you to do. What do you suggest is it worth continuing with therapist or just do these yourself? I feel the therapist isn't worth the money for him. What are some of things that distinguish a good psychologist from a poor one?

Brother, depression is a very complicated beast, it's not always that simple. Secondly, we should avoid giving 'life advise' to people who come to counselors and psychologists because that often makes them feel alienated. They are aware of how things should be but just can't seem to come to that point, primarily in their emotional constitution and emotions are not an obedient beast.

Of course it does, brother, I hope you're getting good quality care that you need. If not, we're here to help.
got a Panic disorder if it counts ...

Though @Signalian means well but that's not how it develops and progresses. Religious guidance can help, if the client is religious but for a psychologist they're trained not to be spiritual healers so we tend to focus on aspects which are universal to all humans - biological processes, social forces, structure of the mind (not brain) etc., So, a psychological problem needs the attention of a trained person. Hope it helps.
Its more than that, I never understand what trigger my panic it might be fear , health , depression .. I had panic attacks during Namaz , sometimes it gets so bad that I had to break Namaz and because of that fear of getting panic attack during Namaz I stopped Offering Namaz for so long .. Only if i know what trigger i might be able to do something about it but the pills I was/is taking helps me a lot .

Spot on.

I do understand where brother @Signalian is coming from but trust me its hard to focus on anything when you are suffering from a Panic attack, for me most of them hit me when I am offering namza , so it starts with a triggering a jerking reaction within my head, than slowly short of breathing , than the heart rate goes from normal to 4x times , when your heart is beating 3-4 times than usual you cant concentrate on anything even Namaz . People who don't suffer from it will never be able to understand, his response was same much of my family but i suffered for nearly 4-5 years , my health destroyed and weight was stuck at 50KG , since i start taking pills I see a significant change in my daily life, no more panic attacks , I become more resistant to them ,as soon as i start feeling to get a Panic attack i start counting from 100 to 1 , it helps me keep my mind off .. second as soon as my daily life improve my weight increases to 63 KG from 50 .. I am still not to the mark , my doctor thinks that my weight should be around 75+ at my age which is 29 , but i still have a ton of anxiety and stress in my life , one of the reason is this DAMN US visa which I am stuck in , my wife is stuck in US and I am here , Its a horrible situation which i wish no one has to go through, All i hope now that this US life or VISA better worth it all that I am suffering for past 2 years .

Greetings everyone,

I'm creating this thread because I feel that there is a need for it on our lovely digital abode. Current affairs, local problems, life's miseries do leave us feeling drained and disturbed sometimes. Plus, there seems to be a stigma regarding addressing mental health issues or asking for counseling when it's felt in our region at least.

This thread is not intended to be a replacement of therapy (that needs to be done one on one) but a place to be at where you voice your concerns and be heard; hopefully end up being pointed in the right direction if you it is needed.

I humbly ask all members of the forum not to abuse this thread nor anyone in it.

I'm a Psychologist with half a decade of experience and I will personally respond as much as I can. Post whatever you feel like though if it's too traumatic then, ask for a private conversation.

Hope it helps, happy foruming and keep smiling.

Bud i pray you get well soon ,have mental and physical peace and may you get visa quick so you can visit your wife.

I started my treatment in November 2018 , and continue it for whole year as per my doctor but I remember my doctor used to have long sessions with me, asking me about my life .. She understood the stress in my life and understand that it wont go away anytime soon, she told me your life my take a drastic change once you move with your wife , and a change in as we say in Urdu ( Aab-o-Hawa ) Environment will effect me in a positive way , I expected to start my new life by now but thanks to this Dumb Administrative processing all the work my Doc did on me is coming back :( She told me that those pills will affect your memory and I can see its effects as well, I wanted to fight this without medication but sometimes its just too hard to get through .

Worse part about Panic attacks is they are unpredictable, they can attack you anytime like Namaz , laying down , on PC , been outside , and for me worse are those when i get when i am far from home , it triggers a fear that if something happens to me that I wont be able to reach home as well .Its Horrible and I wish no one has to suffer from Panic disorder plus if someone is than take help cause it will get worse , unless your life changes drastically or you have a strong will to fight it, unfortunately I don't .

@jaibi Sir would like to ask about my cousin she is a laywer in uk but she sometimes beat herself sometimes remembering old stuff.

when my Wife first came to Pakistan, my entire relatives got a 440 watt shock .. No one in my close Family from both Mother and Father side has married a Foreigner , let alone a white girl ( unfortunately my relatives believe in White = Beautiful ) , it was so bizarre at my reception that my cousin who was taking pictures , has to ask everyone to at least try smile or look happy for the pictures hahahaha

If Jalan , Hasad and buri nazar exists , I got plenty of it since I got married lol from my own Chachay mamu khala aur phuppies ..

Interesting thread. I will keep an eye on this.

Just one question, what's the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? Thanks.

I'm a Psychologist with half a decade of experience and I will personally respond as much as I can.

Meet @ziaulislam , If I remember correctly, he did mention once to be a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
