Dhaka, Aug 22 (bdnews24.com)The Awami League general secretary has accused a section of the media of working to plunge the country into anarchy and has again said a plot is on to assassinate prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
"A ground is being created to kill Sheikh Hasina. Efforts are being made to build a lack of confidence among us," Syed Ashraful Islam said at a discussion meeting on Monday.
The ruling party's spokesman alleged that some media outfits were meticulously conspiring. "Some noises are being made. Some television channels are adding colours to destabilise the country so as to lay the ground for the conspirators to kill Sheikh Hasina."
Reminding all of the Jan 11, 2007 events and the aftermaths, Ashraful told party followers, "We have to thwart all conspiracy against Hasina, have to save (her)."
He was speaking at a condolence programme on the Aug 21, 2004 grenade attack, organised by the Awami League at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Monday.
On Saturday, he had urged the party activists to stay united to protect Hasina and allow democracy to strengthen in Bangladesh.
Before that another leader Mohammad Nasim, son of national leader Monsur Ali, one of four victims of 1975 jail killings, made a similar call.
THEY WANT NO ELECTION
Ashraf, the local government minister, said, "Some newspapers are looking for another 'Anna Hazare'", referring to India's anti-corruption campaigner.
"Is there no parliament in Bangladesh? Is there no democracy in the country? Is Bangladesh fully sunken into corruption?"
Branding those looking for Hazare as the inciters of unelected governments, he also said, "Those are Anna Hazares that created 1/11."
"Those are 'Anna Hazare', who tried to kill democracy, those who tried to kill Hasina. They wanted- there will be no election in the country. So called intellectuals will run the country.
At that time, before the arrest of Hasina, Bengali daily Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman wrote a column requesting Hasina and BNP chief Khaleda Zia to step aside from politics.
A QUARTER IS ACTIVE
Describing the situation after the assassination of the nation's founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the government spokesman said, "Awami League was attacked whenever it lacked resolve."
"Sometimes we drift. Sometimes, it seems to us that power sharing is our main target."
Emphasising the execution of the verdict on Sheikh Mujib killing, grenade attack of Aug 21 and trial of war crimes, he said, "If Sheikh Hasina and her leadership is not there, it will not be possible for us to complete these jobs."
On commodity prices and rundown roads, he said, "Roads and highways are being developed. Sheikh Hasina is working hard round the clock to keep the price of everything under control."
Alluding to the war of words between ministers and ruling alliance MPs over the past few days, the general secretary said a quarter was working to set the leaders against each other and distance the government from party workers.
Hasina was to attend the programme as chief guest but she could not be there because of her illness. Presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury apologised for her.
Among others, Awami League advisory council member Suranjit Sengupta, presidium member Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and home minister Shahara Khatun spoke.
