Even not counting diving events, China has more gold medals than the US.

And I think the real sports for humans as an intelligent creature should be the IQ type of athletic competition. What distinguishes humans from other primates is the constant evolution of human intelligence, which is the most important measure of an animal's level of evolution. In the realm of intellectual athleticism, the Chinese rule the roost.

Diving is an "Aquatic" event, not a swimming event, Aquatic Event is event that happened in or under water, Swimming is Swimming. There are no swimming involved in Diving, well, you do have to swim out of the pool, but that don't really count.

On the other hand, US have a massive Rivalry in Swimming with the Australian, it depends on who on which team, the American dominated last Olympic and WAC because Australian loses big star and the Australian dominated the one before when US loses their big star swimmer and more likely than not whoever dominate swimming is going to top the table on WAC because Swimming have more than twice the event than other 5 disciplines (Diving, High Diving, Artistic Swimming, Open Water event and Water Polo)
