MEATSHOP

The attack comes days after BJP government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came to power in UP.

Three mutton shops were vandalised and burnt by unidentified mob on Tuesday night in Hathras town of Uttar Pradesh, police officials said. The vandalised shops which are located at Jalesar road falling under Hathras Kotwali police station, are owned by Muslim community.

The meat shops belonged to Quraishi community which is traditionally involved in the meat trade.

According to Hathras Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar there was no witness to the burning of the shops.

Police has registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC, Mr. Kumar told The Hindu.

The vandalism of the meat shop came hours after Hathras police raided local meat market and also those in Sahabad and Sahpau to check if the meat shops were selling meat in open market without license from the local civic body.

Police sealed many meat shops when the shop owners could not furnish the license. Immediately after taking oath Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warned the State police that local police officers will be made accountable if illegal meat shops and slaughter houses are found to be functioning.

Riding a strong anti-meat sentiment, the BJP had promised in its manifesto to shut all mechanised slaughter houses immediately after forming government. Several slaughter houses running illegally in the State, were closed down in last two days. Police, on its part, increased vigil across the state to prevent illegal slaughter of cows and buffalos. The attack on Hathras is first incident of mob witch hunting of meat traders.

Earlier, Hindutva groups in the State, kept the anti-meat sentiments running in the public discourse while accusing the slaughter houses to kill cows illegally.

A riot accused BJP MLA from Sardhana in Meerut Sangeet Som, also a headliner Hindutva leader, was in the past a director in beef export companies, as reported by The Hindu.

Legally the State government cannot shut the slaughter houses which are functioning with required permission of the local municipal corporations.

To prevent the legal slaughter houses from functioning the State government will have to amend the municipal act by bringing in a fresh legislation or amending the existing law guiding the municipal bodies.

. . . . . . . .
that is fine but i am afraid the Yogi extremist rule will slowly turn Muslims into keema.

I want to laugh but at the same time that would be very insensitive for such a sensitive issue. India is in full reverse gear.

Indian court declared Ganga and Yamuna 'legal entities' giving them a legal personality. Amazing.

And Indian Supreme court are cowards and in the case of Babri Masjid has asked for an out of court settlement. Muslims just been thrown under a bus.

i am fine with Hindu extremists" empowerment in India. india is a hindu majority country and should be ruled by hindu parties the way these want however if Muslims want to protect themselves they have to join hands recognize their strength and exert their political power. the vote bank is not that weak.

I have no problem with Hindus doing whatever they want in India afterall, India is a Hindu country or will be soon enough. That is up to them. What I have a problem with is Hindus coming here and denying patently obvious things which are ubiquitously available. It is their hypocrisy that grates me. They can ban Islam in India as far as I am concerned. How the Indian Muslims deal with this is anyone's guess, but if they do nothing they are history within a generation at this rate. We are just at the beginning of Hindutva. The launching point for Hindutva wasnt in the 1990's, it wasnt even when Modi was elected, it is starting now. There are institutional changes underway in India such as the govt being able to reject judges to the SC, these kinds of changes that are the springboard for a Nationwide Hindutva wave. Can the Muslims of India withstand this? I dont think so. The Indian Supreme Court just told Muslims where it stands on their issues.

Indian police said Wednesday they were not ruling out arson after fire gutted three butcher shops in Uttar Pradesh state, where a firebrand Hindu leader has taken office promising a crackdown on slaughterhouses.

The meat industry is a magnet for religious violence in India, where Hindus consider cows sacred and accusations of beef being sold by Muslims can trigger violent mob reprisals.

Police were investigating the "mysterious" overnight blaze that reduced the three butcher shops to ashes in Hathras district, local police chief Dilip Kumar told AFP.

"We are not ruling out anything," he said.

The fire comes just days after a hardline Hindu priest-turned-politician took control of Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state with a bloody history of violence between Hindus and Muslims.

Yogi Adityanath is known for his polarising and inflammatory speeches against Muslims, and has railed for harsher penalties for the slaughter of cows, which is already illegal in most Indian states.

He was chosen to lead Uttar Pradesh after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party swept state polls earlier this month, in part on a pledge to clampdown on slaughterhouses.

Since the thumping election victory, dozens of butcher shops deemed illegal by the government have been sealed off across the state in what authorities say is a crackdown on unlicensed traders.

Most butcher shops are run by Muslims and cow slaughter is a flashpoint issue. A 50-year-old Muslim man was dragged from his home in 2015 and beaten to death by roughly 100 people over rumours he ate beef. Police later said it was mutton.

India has witnessed a rise in vigilantism by Hindu extremists since Modi -- whose right-wing party is strongly aligned to Hindu nationalist groups -- was voted to power in 2014.

The tolerant face of India. Sooner or later we are going to witness a full clash between Muslims and Hindus in India. It is inevitable. The cow slaughtering isn't something you can ignore or forget. It is a ticking bomb. The problem is only exacerbated with the current Modi regime. He is picking extremist hardliners for a specific reason. What we are witnessing at the moment are just tiny flashes of things to come. Something big will happen.
