France completes MdCN naval cruise missile firing trials
The French defence procurement agency (Direction générale de l'armement: DGA), conducted the final test firing of the MBDA Missile de Croisière Naval (MdCN) cruise missile on 27 October.
The missile is intended to equip the French Navy's FREMM frigates from 2015, and its Barracuda-class submarines from around 2018.
The final firing was representative of a missile being fired from a frigate and qualified all the flight objectives, notably the missile's range, the DGA stated.
The MdCN has a range of "several hundred kilometres," according to the DGA, and is designed for in-depth strikes into enemy territory to target high-value strategic infrastructures. It is intended to complement the SCALP air-launched cruise missile, from which it is derived.
The test firing took place at the DGA's missile test centre in Biscarrosse on France's southwest coast.

SCALP Naval/MdCN
The SCALP Naval or MdCN (Missile de Croisière Naval – naval cruise missile) is a ship/submarine-launched derivative of the SCALP EG program. Currently under development, this land attack cruise missile is designed to launch from Sylver A70 vertical canisters. This formidable system developed by MBDA is expected to become operational in 2014/2015. 1

Unlike the SCALP Naval’s sister variant (SCALP EG) which are only air-launched, this system can be pre-positioned on frigates and submarines in theater and stay for extended periods based on mission requirements. Additionally, with up to a 1,000 km increase in range over the SCALP EG, the naval-based version is a much more capable stand-off weapon. 2
The SCALP Naval is believed to have a length of 5.5 m (and 6.5 m if the solid propellant boost motor assembly is included). The body diameter is 0.5 m and the launch weight is approximately 1,400 kg. The payload consists of a multipurpose 300 kg HE warhead. The SCALP Naval is expected to have a two-way datalink system for in-flight communication and mid-course correction. The missile is guided by INS/GPS with an IIR terminal seeker. The range is estimated to be 1,000 km when launched from a submarine, and 1,400 km when launched from a frigate. 3
The French Navy has ordered 250 SCALP Naval cruise missiles, 200 of which will be fitted to Aquitaine-class frigates with 16 missile per ship. The remaining 50 will be deployed on Suffren (Barracuda) – class submarines with up to 12 missiles per vessel. 4
Originally, the missile was expected to be operational in 2013/2014, but some have suggested that it may be closer to 2014/2015. The first flight test was conducted by the French DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) in May 2010 on a FREMM frigate. The test launch was successful, and about a year later the SCALP Naval was tested from a submarine successfully. 5
