The Phase 3A work of infrastructural modernisation project of the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), constructed at a cost of Rs. 400 crore with further Rs. 600 crore worth infrastructure being executed, will be completed in the next three years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Phase 3A of the project to the nation on Sunday and inaugurated the production of the Coast Guard Offshore patrol Vessel (CGOPV) project digitally.

The Prime Minister lauded all GSL projects, saying they would take the country towards self-reliance in the defence sector. He said it was an important step in the direction of ‘Make in India’, which was being taken to boost the maritime security.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told The Hindu on Sunday that this Phase 3A facility will be for the upcoming Mine Counter Measure Vessels(MCMV) project being implemented by GSL, amounting to Rs. 32,000 crore. The MCMV project is a good example of the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, where all the 12 vessels are being made locally in Goa, as against the earlier decision to make the first two ships abroad, the minister said.

He said the GSL has started construction of the CGOPV project at a cost of Rs.1,867 crore.

GSL has upgraded infrastructure at a cost of Rs.700 crore to meet the critical operational requirements of the Navy in the MCMV field. This infrastructure will enable construction of GRP-hull MCMVs for the first time in the country. This will be a unique facility available only in Goa and will put India in elite company of only five to six countries which boast of this facility in the world, a GSL spokesperson said on Monday.

The modernisation programme, once fully completed, will result augment GSL’s capacity to fabricate/construct steel, aluminum and GRP-hull vessels to nearly three times the present yard capacity, said the spokesperson.

I think those engines are being used to propel Rajput class of destroyers
