Massive Foreign Aid to India Continues

What you don't understand is that most western European nations, particularly Scandinavians, are welfare states with extensive safety nets for their people. Unlike India, they take care of their people with free health care, education, food stamps, welfare payments, unemployment allowances, etc. etc. They don't throw away anything until their people are taken care of first.

Health care , educatiion, food , welfare, employment etc etc etc are responsibilty of State govt. not Central..........oh man........you dont know anything about India and writing articles.

In my Punjab, State govt. has made schools , where you can study upto 5th standard without fee, Till 10th standard with just 60-70 bucks a year........plz note "A YEAR" not monthly..........Till 12th standard , with 150-200 bucks.
And these also If you are below poverty line standard of Punjab govt. ( not central govt.).................you can get upto 75% discount and books for free.
Mid day meals are given for free in Govt. schools( hhhmmmmm that one is by central govt. I guess, Because I heard FM of India during Budget talking about it)
College fees:
Medical college of Punjab just 13000 bucks a year ...........fun part .....they will pay you 4500 monthly in internship.
engg colleges..........nearly about 20,000 bucks.

______________

now lets come to Health section.
My city is just 4 Kms from border............still have a 500 bed hospital........fee of just "2" bucks..............
Punjab govt. provides financial help to pregnant ladies and free facilities in Govt. Hospitals.

Govt. workers get medical insurance for free from selected private Hospitals
_______________
Unemployment allowances:
Oh man , even bigger states like U.P. gives it..........

__________________
welfare schemes":
Shagun scheme of Punjab Govt, is one example, in which it provide financial help to families to do marriages of their daughters without economic burdens.

Another scheme is "420" of current govt...................which gives wheat at Rs 4 a KG and pulses Rs 20 / kg

Discount passes of Buses( by state govt.} and Railways (central govt.) for students and employes who travel daily.

_________________________

I think it is Tamil Nadu which gives Rice at Rs 2 /Kg.............(not free)

Ok man Now tell me are those points enough for you.

ODA=loan assistance+ grants=soft loans+grants

India will remain the biggest recipient of Japan's official development assistance (ODA) in the near future.

Since Japan's first ODA to India in 1958, the country has received monetary aid worth Rs 89,500 crore (Rs 895 billion) so far, disclosed Noro Motoyoshi, Japanese consul general in Kolkata, at the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BNCCI), Kolkata.

This year the loan assistance to India was up by more than 18% compared to last year at Rs 6916 crore (Rs 69.16 billion).

India tops ODA list

Please refer to my previous post, I repeat again, India is not a developed country. We are entitled to developmental aid and we are receiving. Nothing wrong with that, I presume.

They are Scandinavians and we are Indians. So please stop comparing. Comparison cannot be between Apples and Oranges

I wonder how many poor Indians can take advantage of such generosity when India spends so little on healthcare and education.

The Indian government can't even provide the basics like proper nutrition, security and sanitation to two-thirds of Indians.

Do you know India ranks 171 out of 175 nations in public health spending?

Wockhardt Hospitals Blog: Health of our Nation: India Ranks 171 out of 175 on Healthcare Spending

For a country of one billion, India spends 5.2% of the GDP on healthcare. While 4.3% is spent by the private sector, the government continues to spend only 0.9% on public health
. When the economic growth index is moving forward, the wellness index is dipping.

Of course, the private sector spending is for the rich Indians and foreigners, not the vast majority of the poor Indians.

India ranks 171 out of 175 in public health spending, says WHO study - India - The Times of India

Mr Datta-Ray, former editor of the Statesman, has "humorously postulated what the answer would be to anyone questioning British aid to India, saying that the likely retort would be along the lines of: “Well, after they’ve paid for their military and space programmes, there’s very little left for food. Hardly their fault is it you fascist, racist, holocaust denier!”

Here' the rest of the piece:

India’s foremost journalist and supernumerary fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, has called for the ending of British foreign aid to India, calling it demeaning for his country.

Writing in the Indian Telegraph, Mr Sunanda K Datta-Ray said that it was “demeaning for a country to accept foreign money as it is to export economic refugees, whether highly qualified professionals to America or labourers to Singapore.”

Mr Datta-Ray, former editor of The Statesman in Calcutta and New Delhi, correspondent for the International Herald Tribune and Time magazine, and editorial consultant to Singapore’s The Straits Times newspaper, added that “surrendering British aid would remove an unnecessary irritant. It would also be good for India’s self-respect.”

He went on to reveal that India actually has its own foreign aid programme, called the “Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation” programme. It was launched in 1964 and now helps 156 countries, including Afghanistan.

The bizarre situation has therefore arisen where British taxpayers give untold millions to India, whose government in turn dishes out foreign aid to other countries.

“Many Britons feel that their country cannot afford to lavish £825 million on India over three years,” Mr Datta-Ray said, pointing out that the British taxpayer had already provided India with £1,045 million in aid over the previous five years.

Mr Datta-Ray then humorously postulated what the answer would be to anyone questioning British aid to India, saying that the likely retort would be along the lines of: “Well, after they’ve paid for their military and space programmes, there’s very little left for food. Hardly their fault is it you fascist, racist, holocaust denier!”

He also pointed out some harsh economic realities: the International Monetary Fund fears Britain’s public debt might double to a record 100 percent of the gross domestic product over the next five years and that unemployment (2.4 million without jobs) is at a 14-year high in the UK.

“The image of grinding poverty dies hard despite the US ruling that while Pakistan and Bangladesh are ‘developing’ countries, India is a ‘transforming’ nation (which justified slashing American aid by 35 percent to $81 million) and analysts constantly coupling India with China as the economic powers of the future,” he continued.

“India should now review the entire aid programme and the cost in terms of image, repayment and conditionalities,” he said.

* The British National Party has made it very clear that there will be no foreign aid of any sort paid out while British citizens suffer poverty and the lack of essential services.

This is in stark contrast to the Labour and Tory parties, both of whom have undertaken to increase foreign aid despite British people suffering economically.

Just your quoting from the blog of a racist , insignificant political party in Britain who has one of its primary agendas the reduction of the brown man (yup including Pakistanis) in the UK, shows the height of desperation which you have reached in trying to justify your naive comments in your blog Mr Haq

There has been plenty of criticizm of British aid to India in the mainstream papers as well. Focusing on just this one source does not change that.

Datta-Ray is a respected Indian journalist, not a British xenophobe.

Like many other Indians, Datta-Ray is embarrassed by "Shining India" continued acceptance of billions in foreign aid when it spends far more on its military and space programs, and does not spare much for food for the hungry Indians and other social priorities.

This is something to ponder, rather than glibly dismiss it.

Pakistan receives 6 times more per capita aid from the world..The figures are $ 1.5 for India and $ 10 for Pakistan...

As they say.. Jinke ghar kanch ke hote hain.. Unhen parde band kar ke kapde badalne chahiyen...;)

We are aware of the amount of Foreign aid Pakistan receives, indeed Indians never tire of reminding us of it, but this thread is not about Pakistan's foreign aid is it?

It's about foreign aid and the intent of the thread is fairly clear.. Isn't it??

Also the thread begins with the following line

"In spite of all of the recent news about aid to Pakistan dominating the media, the fact remains that resurgent India has received more foreign aid than any other developing nation since the end of World War II"

so the thread starter got Pakistan in and stated that India receives more aid than any other nation. I am just putting the aid in question in perspective.

As they say, Riaz left the door open by drawing the comparison in the 1st post itself.. I am just walking in thru that door..
