Mass Transit System likely in three years

The twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad would have joint Mass Transit System (MTS), but the implementation of the project would not be possible before three years.


Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif desired to have a MTS for Rawalpindi and Islamabad but as per international procedures, it would take 3 years to be completed.


However, the timeframe could be reduced if the Punjab chief minister gives directions to complete project within few months


The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Punjab Metrobus Authority (PMA) have embarked on a joint venture with PMA as key player to give the twin cities a modern MTS to facilitate people travelling between the two cities.


Recently, an advertisement had also appeared in newspapers according to which the PMA in order to accomplish its joint venture with CDA, wanted to hire a national or international consultant to carry out feasibility report in maximum time of six months. The financial and technical bids of firms intending to conduct feasibility report, would also be opened at the office of PMA in Lahore on October 7.


The consultant would be required to identify corridor in two cities for the Mass Transit System (MTS). “We have options of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) or it can be mix of two or three options depending on the corridor available for the MTS,” the sources in PMA said.


The sources said the representatives of ongoing transport plying on routes between two cities would also be taken on board before carrying out the project. According to estimates, there is traffic volume of 210,000 vehicles on daily basis carrying 525,000 passengers on three corridors while there is still demand of 158,000 for the public transport system between twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

I would say, instead of taking loans from the banks for this project, the government should wait, prepare an in dept feasibility report, save money for the whole project and than start the project. Not a single Rupee should be taken from the banks for this project. Thats what I want
