Maoists trying to open new theatre in south India: MHA - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Maoists are making efforts to open a new theatre in south India with movement of armed cadres witnessed in Western Ghats and tri-junction of Tamil Nadu-Kerala-Karnataka, posing a serious security threat to the three states.

In an internal communication, the home ministry has said the CPI (Maoist)'s efforts in the direction of expanding its organisational base in Western Ghats and the area around the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu-Kerala-Karnataka are discernible.

The activities are in the form of relative increase in movement of armed cadres in the area, along with activities of its frontal organizations and over-ground elements.

The efforts of the Maoists to open a new theatre in south India is a cause for serious concern.

However, at this stage it can easily be controlled through a well-formulated action plan, the home ministry said.

During this year, so far, presence and movement of armed CPI (Maoist) groups have been noticed on over two dozen occasions in the districts of Malappuram, Wayanand and Kannur in Kerala and Mysore, Kodagu, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Shimoga districts in Karnataka.

Though adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu have not witnessed any movement of armed Naxal cadres, activities of its front bodies have increased distinctively in Erode district, the home ministry said.

Based on various intelligence inputs, the ministry has asked police forces of the three states to maintain strict vigil along the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu-Kerala-Karnataka and all-out efforts be made to check the activities of the Naxals in the initial stage itself.

"If necessary, joint operations of the three states may be conducted to maintain the dominance of the administration in the area and thwart any attempt of the CPI (Maoist) to build their hideouts or organisation at this strategic tri-junction," the home ministry told the three states.

The Centre has recently said that ideologues of the Maoists are more dangerous than the armed cadres, who have killed more than 8,100 civilians and policemen since 2001.

Yes ,serious threat from maoists is present in my home state, kerala. But it is not new information,
Maoists from northern states try several years for developing a base in western ghats, but they severly fail, the main reason most of youths in the kerala and tamil nadu states are well educated and has self awarness, specially in kerala. So far they are failed.I dont think their plans work here.

Indeed ....eternal vigilance is the cost of liberty !!!

We have already seen how Kerala has emerged as Launchpad terrorism in India ...

we don't want addition of another 'element ' to weakening internal security ...

first step to tackle Maoism , naxalism is to curb its growth and stop it from gaining momentum by preventing it from spreading to hitherto non-traditional areas ...

Maoist have been crushed in A.P successfully and there chances of succeeding in western ghats is not bright

The failure to curb maoist/naxalist movement in central part of India has been major debacle of Ministry of home affairs ...

Centre and states are engaged in mutual blame game ....nobody seems to have real guts to get into root of this issue ...

I just hope after 2014 elections , better government is installed at the center which will take pro-active role in tackling these issues ...

we see these piecemeal successes interlaced with gross failures ....

I wonder just as we succeeded in routing khalistan movement in Punjab ....

( that too has started re-surfacing its ugly head now ..that's another issue although )

why we can't adopt similar strategy and can't replicate same success when it comes to naxalism in central part of India ???

Naxalites in Andhra were controlled with active agreements between state and central govt. and since last 10 years the central states specially Jharkand and Chattisgargh suffered because of diffrences with center

+Centre can help in providing law and order angle of naxalites but on basic grounds issues from which naxalites breed has to be taken care by state govts by addressing there genuine problems like land grabs and illegal mining, here center has lesser role to play

True . frankly speaking there is no reason why these problems can't be solved for once and all ...

Partly they have been our own making ....and we have been responsible to perpetuate these problems ...

I am quite surprised why we can't put our acts together and fight these problems jointly .

Maoist operating in TN have a very very remote chances. Police become goddamn vigilant when it comes to terrorism.

Not surprising if you don't punish them with bullets and bombs this is bound to happen.
Make these mutterfrrukter rot and die like road kills

Terrorism is a problem,in some part of northern kerala. But they cant influence society like in northern states.Self awarness is that much in people.Maoists chance is only at waynad area.and so far our police handle it effectievely
