Maoists blew up a portion of the bridge over river Saveri in Kalimela of the district on Friday night ahead of their indefinite bandh call. However, there was no casualty.
A group of 40 slogan shouting Maoists along with their supporters reached the bridge close to Kalimela SC/ST department managed Girls High School at around 2 am and planted powerful explosives under the bridge before triggering the blast, sources said.
The intensity of the blast was so powerful that it could be heard in Kalimela town.
In a hand-written poster put up on a tree at the spot, the Maoists claimed the responsibility for the blast stating that the incident was a part of their protest against the Central Government’s decision to intensify anti-Maoist operation and Silakota encounter on September 24 when 13 rebels were killed.
The bridge was blown up apparently to stall the movement of security forces who use the road to undertake combing operations against the Red rebels, police said.
In a related development, the Maoists looted the house of Special Police Officer (SPO) Lacha Madkami at his Sangel village in Kalimela late Friday night.
Earlier, the ultras had asked Lacha to quit the police job or face the consequences, police said.
Malkangiri SP Akhileswar Singh said Maoist cadres from Chhattisgarh and local area were involved in the blast.
After a series of arrests, surrenders and successful encounters, the Maoists are facing cadre crisis for which they have deputed some rebels from Chhattisgarh.Singh said the Maoists are trying to regroup in the area and rebuild their movement. There is a move by them to resurface in the district in a big way but it would be repulsed, he added.
Meanwhile, the vehicular traffic went off the road in many parts of the district except the headquarters town on the first day of the indefinite bandh called by the Maoists. No bus plied between Malkangiri and Jeypore. The State- run OSRTC also suspended its buses on the route as a preventive step. Attendance in government offices in Kalimela, Podia, MV-79, and Motu, Chitrakonda, Khairput, Kudmulguma, Mathili and Govindpalli was affected as the vehicles remained off the road. Communication between Podia and Kalimela was restored in the evening after the completion of repair work undertaken by the BSF and local police jointly, said the SP.
