At least 21 people, including two children, have been killed in suspected Russian air strikes on a market in a Damascus suburb, witnesses told Al Jazeera.

Baraa, a Syrian activist in Douma, said on Friday that Russian air strikes had hit the Kouatly market in Douma, just outside of the capital. Several people were seriously wounded.

"For the past half-an-hour, we have been hearing warplanes roaming above us. The air strikes targeted a busy market around 15 minutes ago," he said.

"Most of those killed and injured are [adult] women and men. We know those warplanes are Russian because of the type of missiles that were used.

"The rebels also have special devices that can intercept signals from approaching warplanes; they are Russian," Baraa said.

An officer from the Douma branch of the Syria Civil Defence department, who wished to remain anonymous, told Al Jazeera that at least three air strikes had targeted residential areas in the suburb within the past hour.

"The air strikes are targeting the centre of Douma, including a market and residential street," he said.

"Not just air strikes - rockets are being launched into the city too. More than 21 people have been killed, including two children, and dozens of others have been injured.

"The Syria Civil Defence members are at the scene now trying to rescue the civilians. The death toll is expected to rise," he told Al Jazeera over the phone.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director, Rami Abdel Rahman, said the toll was expected to rise because of the number of people seriously wounded.

Douma, which lies east of Damascus, has been under intense government attack for weeks.

Last week, air strikes in Douma killed 61 people and left over 100 others injured.

Footage of the aftermath posted on YouTube purportedly showed people attempting to carry the injured into vans for safety, away from the burning remains of the market.

The Russians don't care about Shia-Sunni divide. They're in this to pressure the US, and are more than willing to get rid of Assad, as long as their goals are met. This is why the Russians recently suggested that Assad isn't essential to peace in Syria.

These bombings are nothing more than a show of force, and a way to win international brownie points. Why do you think the Russians were so successful at the last UNGC? Exactly because the Russians looked more proactive in the region than the US looked, even if the opposite may be true.

Yes i believe that too. They just successfully distracted international media attention from Ukraine to Syria. Kudos to that. But did you also realize that majority of their targets are not ISIS but other rebel forces who were gaining ground against both Assad and ISIS.

Do you really know the ground reality? And the reason behind Russian Intervention? And what exactly had happened and is happening in Ukraine?

Personally, I believe the Russians are using Syria to get the US to give up on Crimea. The logic being, Russia will side with the US on Assad, as long as the US no longer brings up Crimea and Ukraine. While I don't have direct evidence of this, the fact that Russia recently suggested that Assad isn't important to peace in Syria, pretty much adds to my argument.

Pretty much. They're targeting US interests to put pressure. Russia's end goal is to get the US to come to the negotiating table, and to weaken the US stance before negotiations begin.

This is your analysis:

1. Russians are putting the pressure on the U.S by bombing a market place, and killing children and civilians

2. Russians win international brownie points for bombing a marketplace

3. By bombing a marketplace killing women and children, they look proactive, and it's a thumb in our eyes?

Dude! you mind is a beautiful thing. :suicide2:

If ISIS isn't stopped, then there will be a lot lot more deaths.

Russia is doing the tough and ugly job that US won't due to political reasons relating to Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Let them ALL kill each other. They are ALL our enemies. :usflag:

Relating to Turkey and Saudi Arabia? What exactly is that genius?

How does us supporting Yazidis and Peshmerga help Turkey, genius?
