Imphal, December 18: A curfew has been imposed in Manipur’s capital east Imphal after clashes broke out in the region. According to reports on Sunday afternoon, some angry protesters burnt several buses over the ongoing economic blockade in the state and a series of terrorist attacks on the security forces earlier this week. After violence erupted in the region the state government decided to impose indefinite curfew in the Imphal east district.
According to NDTV reports, protesters attacked several vehicles coming from Naga-dominated hill districts towards Imphal. As the crowd turned violent, several vehicles have been set on fire and vandalised and even one bus was pushed into the river. There are no reports of any casualties.
After a series of blast on Friday and an attack on the oldest Baptist church in Manipur, the state government today decided to shut down internet services in the Imphal West district.
Since November, Manipur has been reeling the pressure of economic blockade which was imposed by Naga tribals. The blockade has throttled the supply of essentials, including fuel and medicines to the state. The blockade has also raised prices of daily necessities.
In recent weeks there has been a spike in incidents of attacks by suspected Naga terror groups like the recent ones. The terror strikes and the economic blockade has been seen as a response to the government’s decision to carve out seven new districts in the state. The Naga groups allege that the new districts encroach on their old ancestral land.
On Saturday evening, a group of 70 suspected Naga terrorists attacked a police post in which two policemen were injured and the attackers flew away with nine automatic weapons. The terror attack came during the shutdown called by civil society groups against the economic blockade.
