Mandsaur agitation: How demonetisation brought MP farmers onto streets
In Mandsaur, demonetisation has disrupted every aspect of the rural economy – land markets, credit networks, procurement, and crop prices.

  • demonetisation.

“Notebandi destroyed the trust between farmer and trader,” said Sunil Ghatiya, a soybean trader in Mandsaur’s Pipliya Mandi, “It finished off our market.”

“A farmer sells when he needs cash immediately – for a wedding, a funeral, to pay a loan,” said Madan Lal Viswakarma, “But after notebandi, traders at the government-run markets only pay by cheque.”
“The traders exploited us,” said Dinesh Patidar, whose son Abhishek was killed when police opened fire on farmers demanding loan waivers and better prices for their crops, “They knew the farmers were desperate for cash.” The Modi government insists the economy has weathered the shock of demonetisation of 86% of India’s currency on 8 November last year, even as evidence to the contrary piles up and economists say they lack the tools to isolate its effects.

In Mandsaur, where four days of rioting resulted in the deaths of five farmers and the destruction of crops, farms, shops, and trucks, the policy’s effects are visible: demonetisation has disrupted every aspect of the rural economy – land markets, credit networks, procurement, and crop prices. “A farmer sells when he needs cash immediately – for a wedding, a funeral, to pay a loan,” said Madan Lal Viswakarma, “But after notebandi, traders at the government-run markets only pay by cheque.”

The cheques take 20 days to clear, Madan Lal said, and then the banks have no currency to give. “If you want cash, the traders beat down your price, and charge two rupees on every hundred they pay,” he said.

The quest for cash, Lakshmi Narayan Viswakarma said, had pushed farmers deeper into debt.

“At harvest, everyone rushes to sell so they can pay back their loans,” he said, explaining that money lenders lend at 2% per month, or 24% a year, and settle all accounts in cash. Those who can’t pay, like farmer Dinesh Patidar, are forced to sell their land.

“But land prices have halved, from Rs 5 lakh per bigha, to Rs 2.5 lakh per bigha,” said Patidar. “After notebandi, no one has the cash to buy land,” he added.

Across the road from Patidar’s home, traders said the note-ban had destroyed them as well. “The farmers demanded cash, but the government tied our hands,” said Ghatiya, the soybean trader. “Some cheques bounced because of a spelling mistake, the farmers felt we were cheating them.”

Trader credit had dried up as well, reducing each trader’s purchasing power. “A lot of chit-fund money finds its way into the agricultural markets,” said a pulse trader, “That completely vanished this year, so traders couldn’t buy as much as they usually do.” As a result, unsold produce started piling up, and the price of all crops crashed.

“The price-crash has affected us as well,” said Ghatiya, “The value of the stocks in our godowns has fallen too.”

This spiral of currency shortage and falling prices, traders and farmers agreed, meant the market was on edge even before the protests began on June 1. So when farmers and traders got into an argument on June 5, the violence quickly escalated. “On one hand you had gun-powder, on the other a match,” said a senior cop, “All you needed was a spark.”

Helpline to save Kerala Christians from 'love jihad', and a BJP Minority Morcha man’s behind it

While the BJP Minority Morcha leader claimed that some Christian priests had lent support to the initiative, they were unwilling to openly admit it.

“Christians group in Kerala launches helpline to save ‘their’ girls from Muslim boys”, screams one headline. Another reads, “Xian group helpline to curb inter-religious affairs”. While several media outlets last week published reports that a Christian helpline was launched in Kerala to prevent ‘love jihad’, what those news reports failed to highlight was that the initiative was envisioned by Kerala BJP Minority Morcha member Renjith Abraham Thomas, who is the former Malappuram district secretary of the outfit.

Similar to the Hindu helpline launched by the Sangh Parivar earlier, the Christian helpline that is now active, will have a permanent office in Ernakulam from July. Speaking to TNM, Renjith stressed that the initiative is linked to the BJP Minority Morcha unit in Kerala and that members of the Hindu helpline would help executive the Christian helpline.

While the helpline comes weeks after the Kerala High Court annulled the marriage of a Muslim man to a Hindu girl, who converted to Islam, Renjith explained that ‘love jihad’ is a threat in central and northern Kerala, where Christian girls easily become victims and are later recruited into terror outfits like Islamic State.

“This is a serious issue, not only Christian girls, Hindu girls also fall prey to love jihad. Actually, they are more in number. We have collected all details on how these boys trap the girls. They use some similarities of Muslim religion with Christianity and trap them. Students of Malappuram nursing and medical colleges get trapped a lot in this love jihad,” Renjith said.

The BJP Minority Morcha leader points to the case of missing Kerala youth, who had left for Syria to join IS last year. Few of those who went missing were Christian girls, who converted to Islam after falling in love and marrying Muslim boys.

While Renjith claimed that some Christian priests had lent support to the initiative, they were unwilling to openly admit it.

“Almost seven catholic priests and pastors from Indian Pentacost Church have extended their support, but they cannot admit it openly as they are scared. Almost 18 Christian churches contacted us. All Christian groups are joining hands against this. Even Christian parents need such a system to help these girls,” Renjith said.

He also alleged that in Kannur, a lot of Christian girls are getting converted to Islam mysteriously. “In Kannur, Malappuram, Idukki and in Thrissur also we have spotted a lot of such cases. Through this helpline we will appoint people to council the girls who fall prey to it. We also hope there will be priests to support us in religious counselling sessions,” he said.

Renjith said Mathews Mar Gregorious, the Metropolitan of Indian Orthodox Independent Syrian church, is the patron of the helpline.

Speaking to TNM the Metropolitan said that he had offered to provide support and advice to the mission, but he has certain limitations.

“They have approached me seeking advice and suggestions, I have offered to do that. But I can’t do anything more as I am under a church. I have come to know about few cases where Christian girls got married to Muslims, I have acted against it,” he said.

cheques take 20 days to clear?

Well they can take cheques on the name of bearer then, and pass it on to the lenders. There are ways, cheques are as good an instrument for transaction as paper money. Someone is making the after-effects of demonetization much bigger than it is. Only reason I can find to justify such credit crunch from traders and lenders is -they are wary of getting held by IT, having been jolted awake by demonetization. There is not enough black money anymore.

Trying convincing your fellow christian Ranjith Thomas  ........ why tell me ?

Meanwhile,

Father Johny Chittemariyil of Vimalagiri church while opposing the views of Mr PT Thomas MP, (who was against the church and bishops), wrongly claims that the honorable MP’s wife Mrs Uma Thomas is a daughter of one Mr Shenoy.

But when Mrs Uma registered her protest, the priest posted an apology accepting his mistake, The apology, apart from accepting the mistake, indirectly highlights the fact that Mrs Uma Thomas is the daughter of a Tamil Brahmin.

LOL at the shameless communal politics by the church.
