A man who stuck toothpicks in bus seats with the pointed ends sticking out was fined $3,600 on Monday (6 November) after he pleaded guilty to two charges of causing mischief.

He was also ordered to pay $325.91 in compensation for the damage caused.

Lim Lye Seng, 60, admitted in the State Courts to committing the offences four times between July and August this year on SBS Transit bus number 123M along Lower Delta Road. Two other similar charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Addressing Lim during sentencing, District Judge Lim Keng Yeow said, “No one should be excused for doing these things, especially not someone like you, a 60-year-old.”

According to court documents, Lim took toothpicks from a coffee shop near Tiong Bahru and committed the offences because he was bored and wanted to play a prank on others.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Rimplejit Kaur had asked for a short custodial sentence, arguing that damage was caused to public property and that there was an inherent risk of hurt that could have been caused if a member of the public were to sit on the toothpicks.

In July, a passenger who was on the bus posted photos of the toothpicks in the seat on social media. The police received a report about the incident on 4 August and identified Lim through closed-circuit television footage. The cost of the damage to the bus seats was estimated to be over $1,300.

In his mitigation on 11 October, Lim, who works as a landscape technician, had asked for a fine instead of a custodial sentence. He told the court that he is supporting two young children and his elderly parents.

For causing mischief, Lim could have been sentenced to a one-year jail term and/or a fine for each charge.

More likely delayed mid life crisis.
This fellow very lucky, only $3,600 fine plus $325.91 in compensation.
His action could also be charged under vandalism and punishment carries a mandatory sentence of caning for those aged below 50.
