ABIDJAN/PARIS (Reuters) - French forces killed 33 militants on Saturday in Mali near the border with Mauritania, French President Emmanuel Macron said.

“This morning, thanks to an engagement by our soldiers and the Barkhane forces, we were able to neutralise 33 terrorists, take one prisoner and free two Malian gendarmes who had been held hostage,” Macron said during in a speech in Ivory Coast.

France, the former colonial power, is the only Western country with a significant military presence waging counter-insurgency operations in Mali and the wider Sahel, an arid region of West Africa below the Sahara desert.

French army command confirmed the death toll in the operation, which it said took place overnight near the Mauritanian border about 150 km (90 miles) northwest of the town of Mopti in Mali.

France controls 85% of the national reserves of 14 African countries. They are all forced to pay colonial tax to France. The 14 countries are obliged to put 50% of their foreign exchange reserves at the Bank of France, and can only use 15% yearly, or pay to use their own money.

7 more terrorists were killed during the continued operations in the forest of Ouagadou,where the katiba macina was active. It means 40 terrorists were killed during the operation. Large quantities of ammos were seized,several motorbikes and vehicles were captured. (including equipped with anti air guns). Two Malian gendarmes were freed during the op. No reported French casualties.

@waz Talking about drone strikes,things went quick as the two first reaper strikes were conducted this week end. This will allow direct neutralization of monitored terrorist groups instead of Mirage 2000 sorties,tankers etc. thus wasting time and money.
