and to me, the ummah is about a common ancestry, heritage, culture, civilization. It's not so much about Islam or Allah.

Kind of like how western civilization includes everyone from Catholics, to Anglicans, to Mormons.

I mean that what is done is done.
Pakistan will never change its script. Turkey and Malaysia had their own reasons to change it.
End of the day you can get over that and come together or bicker and let the western powers continue to humiliate you.

You do now it's not the script that is the issue or even dress. Both are indicative of something more profound. The ability of a nation to move forward from the past. Adapt. Flexibility to change. Not being stuck in the past. Once that mindset becomes accepted in a society progress follows. Or it will always be plagued by what was the reason for it's backwardness in the first place. Expecting good to come out of the failed recipe is stupidity.

Interesting thing is Muslim countries that show flexibility to change have made more progress. Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia being good examples.

So, this is the question.
Can Muslims (Pakistanis) kill the thing they love to save it?

Islam was the best system of humanity in the pre-industrial age.
Post industrial, we are the worst. Not a single Muslim country (outside maybe Turkey) that is considered a world power in all aspects of that word.

In my mind, we need to follow a development model that the west did, but at the same time try our best to save our culture.
Japan did a similar thing.
Samurai were so deeply ingrained in their culture, but the samurai held them back so they got rid of them. But they didn't get rid of everything, they kept the parts that were not holding them back.

Some people instead of learning ا ب پ want us to use ABC for urdu and other regional languages so that they can understand newspapers etc but in Pakistan we already know this script and use it all the time

The parts which are holding us back are not based directly on revealed text but are our own biased prejudiced interpretations i.e such inflexible edictal norms developed and ossified largely after 11th century and we can do away with them.
