KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday (Oct 27) launched what is believed to be the world's first integrated force, whose job is to safeguard the country from threats to national security.
For now, more than 170 personnel from the Malaysian military and police, as well as the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, are involved in its operations.
"I understand this is the first time something like this has been formed," said Mr Najib. "The only force in the world ... we are the only government in the world who has created a force like this."
The National Special Operations Force, which at the moment is almost fully operational, works to support the new National Security Council Act.
The controversial act came into force in August and gives the National Security Council chaired by the prime minister power to declare security zones for up to six months. Within those zones, authorities are empowered to arrest, search or seize without warrants.

Full on drill by National Special Operations Force, complete with explosives, guns and helicopters.
When asked what kind of threat would warrant the deployment of this force, Mr Najib said: "The threat will be decided. If something happens, the National Security Council will make a report to the Inspector-General of Police and the army chief. Then they will refer to the prime minister for directions on deploying them."
Despite criticism that the council has too much power, Mr Najib said the main purpose of this National Special Operations Force is to protect the citizens - nothing more, nothing less.
He said the country needs to be prepared, especially against threats of terror.
Malaysian authorities have been stepping up security sweeps since June, when police said the country suffered its first terror attack linked to the Islamic State group. A grenade had gone off at a nightspot in Selangor, injuring eight people.
