ISLAMABAD: For the first time in history, the parliamentary session of the National Assembly was held under solar energy, which generated 80 Megawatts (MW), consumed 62MW while the surplus production of 18MW was contributed to the national grid.

The speaker proudly announced that ever since the 1MW project of ‘Solar Energy’ at the Parliament House Islamabad was launched, it had generated 80MW electricity. This makes Pakistan Parliament the first in the world to completely shift on solar power. Earlier, Knesset, the Parliament of Israel, was also consuming the solar energy but it only generates10% of its total energy through solar means.

It is worth mentioning that Pakistan’s Parliament has been issued a ‘Net-Metering’ license by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). Net-Metering mechanism helps in delivering and adding the surplus production of energy to the national grid. This very project is environment friendly as it reduces the emission of hazardous gases, which invite global warming.

The National Assembly speaker acknowledged the assistance of the Chinese government for financially supporting this solar project of 1 MW/hour. The speaker also thanked the fellow parliamentarians, the media and employees of the parliament for their confidence and support in boosting the role of the parliament for an enlightened future of the country.

It may be recalled that the solar project was launched jointly by the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during the former’s visit to Pakistan last year.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to formally ‘Switch On’ the parliament’s Solar Programme sometime later this month. A hallmark among Speaker Ayaz Sadiq’s numerous initiatives, the project seemingly promises a success story for other state institutions to follow in order to help getting rid from its prevailing acute energy crises.

A very good step imo :)

If they allow/initiate net metering, a lot of people would opt for solar energy as the sun shines 365 days a year in Pakistan with minimum of 9 to max of 12 hours a day, which makes the initial investment to be recovered in a shorter time with guaranteed power supply.

Journalists should learn science or at least hire few science grads to proof read their articles. Pathetic use of units

62MW only parliament consumes? I think its more than 4 stadiums Or Minimum 10-20 buildings in Pakistan.

More institutes should move towards Solar. I have seen Textile Industries running on Solar. SMEs can utilize Solar in better manner.
