KARACHI: Minister for Maritime Affairs and Foreign Affairs Abdullah Hussain Haroon on Friday said that ExxonMobil has indicated that it is close to hitting huge oil reserves near the Pak-Iran border, which could be even bigger than the Kuwaiti reserves.

Addressing business leaders at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), the minister said that ExxonMobil — an American multinational oil and gas company — has so far drilled up to 5,000 meters close to the Iranian border and is optimistic about the oil find.

The Government of Pakistan, he said, has already taken an undertaking from the company to set up a generation complex worth $10 billion.

The government is also encouraging Chinese and Western investment in the country, he added.

He further said that there is a need to integrate the Karachi Port and Port Qasim so that they could supplement each other in the larger interest of the country.

On the occasion, he said the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) has sufficient funds for purchasing two vessels but this will be done by next government.

The minister said that there is greater need to have new area for fish harbour because the existing one has many issues and there is shortage of land. However, he regretted that the harbour is not well kept and hoped that the European Union (EU) will give subsidy for new fish harbour.

“Foreign investors are interested in coming to Pakistan, provided we manage to meet their standards and attract them to make investment,” he stressed.

The minister advised that ports should be developed so that they could meet the country’s demand on the basis of its markets and products and fully supported the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) development projects highlighted by KPT Chairman Admiral Jamil Akhtar.

Responding to a question, Mr Haroon said that there was no need to give Pakistani land to foreigners, adding: “There is need that as a nation should take up such projects of national importance.”

Oil reserves in Kuwait
make up 8% of the oil reserves in the world.

Kuwait is OPEC's third largest oil producer and claims to hold approximately 104 billion barrels (16.5×109 m3). This includes half of the 5 billion barrels (790×106 m3) in the Saudi-Kuwaiti neutral zone which Kuwait shares with Saudi Arabia.

Most of Kuwait's oil reserves are located in the 70 billion barrels (11×109 m3) Burgan field, the second largest conventional oil field in the world, which has been producing oil since 1938. Since most of Kuwait's major oil fields are over 60 years old, maintaining production rates is becoming a problem. Wiki

even bigger than the Kuwaiti reserves

Is this joke? Where are figures to prove it?

But anyway, If we drill in Baluchistan near Iranian border than we can steal Iranian Oil and Iran have plenty of it :)

Some observers believe that discovery and drilling of oil wells in Balochistan may cause the Iran’s oil to flow towards the province, which is physically located below the level of surface in Iran. Some independent analysts have even claimed that Pakistan is bound for not drilling oil wells in southern Balochistan under a deal with Iran, as the neighboring country would lose most of its oil for its flow toward lower landscape.

The geographical view and the landscape in Iran further reinforce the idea of oil flowing from upper surface in Iran to lower surface in Balochistan. With an area of 1,648,000 square kilometers, Iran is located in southwestern Asia. It shares its northern border with the Russia. Its western borders are with Turkey in the north and Iraq in the south. Its southern border is formed by the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman littorals. Its eastern borders are with Afghanistan on the north and Pakistan on the south. Iran’s high interior basin is surrounded by a series of mountain ranges. Most of the country is above 1,500 feet, one-sixth of it over 6,500 high, depicting a sharp contrast to its coastal regions, which are outside the mountain ring.

In geographical perspective, if one sees from Iranian side, Balochistan is located on south of its eastern borders. In the north, the 400-mile strip along the Caspian Sea falls sharply from the 10,000-foot height to 90 feet below sea level. In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

yes, these r the oil reserves that an AIDE of Ayub Khan was talking abt in his book. The reason why iran helped us in 1965 war was because that we reached a treaty with Shah that Pakistan will not extract oil from Balochistan in next 100 years, so that the oil in Sistan dont go dry as the underground crust of the earth in this area is sloped towards Pakistan, and oil being a liquid will always have tendency to move from lower concentration to higher concentration. Hence the oil under balochistan is much much larger then sistan, but if Pakistan started drilling it then Sistan will turn dry much faster.

Interestingly After Irani revolution the government of Iran broke all the packs and treaties Shah had before for iran and renegotiated them except for this one nor was ever discussed with Pakistan nor any Pakistani brought this up with them.

If this true then it should be reversed now!

America knew abt this oil reserve all along, this ExxonMobil discovery isnt new which itself is an American company. Because back then also America had done recce of entire Pakistan for resources too during that honeymoon period of Ayub Khan with America.

Good news.
Don't believe them. Iranian oilfields are way to the west and the proximate region of Iran has no oil. It is dry. And this whole idea of oil flowing down [in practice not in theory] is dumber than dumb. Laughable. Water car sounds more plausible!

The nearest oil wells in Iran are about 400 miles west and belong to the same cluster as UAE, Bahrain, Qatar. Hell if this was true we could 'pinch' UAE oil by simply drilling well deep under the sea and all the oil from Oman, UAE, Iran would flow into it.

8-) We find these assets all the time we just don't know how to get it out

we dont find assets of this size

so you dont think their is oil there?

We should drill it as soon as possible with the help of international companies. If we have large reserves there we should utilize it and it will help to reduce oil dependence on other countries. This will bring positive effect on our economy.
