Maiden shipment of steel on new Indo-Bangladesh route flagged-off

Is BAL charging the indians for this or does the gravy train roll on?

I doubt they are.

Indians are experts at whining and getting things for free.

They still owe us tens of millions of dollars in Internet bandwidth charges. VSNL simply stopped paying.

Kanjoos-e-makkhichoos.

My experience is that selfish and narrow-minded behavior pervades the mentality of a large swath of the Hindu Indian population in most areas of the cow-belt, where their level of education low and backdated anti-Muslim prejudices super high. How do you think Hindu extremists can get elected? These people are clueless.

Bengalis (especially educated Bengalis) are an exception of course as are some areas in the North of the country (Indian Punjab) and some in the South where education has removed old prejudices. But yes, cow belt unfortunately is a lost cause, i.e. Bhojpuri culture.

I will let an Indian brother explain it of course - @jamahir bhai, am I too far off the mark?

No, Bilal bhai, you are not off the mark. About one of the cow belt states, Uttar Pradesh, just a few days ago there was an incident where a girl of 17 wanted to wear jeans but her male relatives wouldn't allow her to and then they assaulted her, banging her against the wall after which she died or was half dead following which they tried to dispose her off by throwing her off a bridge, dead by then or maybe not, but she got stuck in the bridge railings, left hanging there until her mother complained to the police following which the police searched and found her body hanging upside down from the bridge railings. What was her crime ? Was she a moneylender who had forced a thousand farmers to suicide ? Or a coaching institute principal in the notorious town of Kota who pressurized some students to suicide ? Was she the mother of those students who had forced the students to suicide ? Was she a religious fanatic who wanted to genocide ? Was she part of a lynch mob ? No, her family was the lynch mob and she was the victim. And for what ? She just wanted to wear jeans. A lot of India and a lot of the world has not evolved in many senses, whether it be this girl's male relatives or it be the American president who wants to regime-change some progressive country at least once a decade. This at a time when in six years or so some humans will certainly land on Mars which will be one of the biggest positive news in history.

And I want to extend @Wergeland's post# 11 and say that such a huge Indian population of 1.4 billion should logically mean a huge human resource potential of hundreds of millions of people who should be contributing to the advancement of the country and humanity. But sadly is India advanced and harmonious internally itself ?

Excellent post bhai. In Bangladesh villages too - many people are like this.

Though they may not actually go as far as beat up women.

Lack of education and sense is the cause obviously. Really Sad.

Lol...no. You guys are only happy to sell. When it comes BD wanting to export stuff to you, excuses galore.
Just had a made in Bangladesh Pran biscuit yesterday, costed me ₹25 same as any other Indian biscuit would, so where’s the excuse? Had your ECI been higher you would’ve had more to export, you tell me 80% of your overall exports are RMGs and India has a sizeable Textile industry, what we don’t have or have but expensive is what we or any country would want to import.

Initially 1058 BDT for each ton of freight was recommended by core committee who was asked to set the price. But that was rejected by Commerce Ministry who set the price only BDT 277 for each ton of freight.

So just imagine 10 ton of freight can transit by paying only 2770 taka which not even is a air fare of a passenger to travel from Dhaka to Kolkata, let alone Assam to any cities of Bengal.

Plus no charge of import duty.

These are total breakdown of the charges:

Fees and Charges

The transit fees for India are extraordinarily low in the riverways at the moment. Under the river protocol, Bangladesh charges only BDT 277 for each ton of freight. This is very low compared to the initial recommendation of BDT 1058 made by the core committee created by the commerce ministry.

However, the recommendations of the core committee were rejected by the Commerce ministry and the charges were agreed at BDT 277 per tonne of freight.

New Challenges

Indian cargo ships have been allowed to use the ports without fixing fees for now as the first shipment was supposed to be a test run to determine appropriate fees for the entire process. The first Indian Shipment carrying trans-shipment goods reached Chattogram port around July 21st. Although in this case it was only 4 containers, the amount will gradually increase in the future.[3]

Fixing New Fares

Although the use of ports have been finalized, fees are yet to be fixed. No custom duties will be applicable in transit as India and Bangladesh are signatory countries of General Agreement on Trade and Tariff (GATT). The fares will mainly be applied by Bangladesh on account of its roads and ports being used.

Although there is no official statement about a rate yet, The Dhaka Tribune reports that officials have proposed a rate of BDT 192 per Ton for port use and BDT 34 for ship landing charge. In addition to these charges, the road transport and bridges ministry has proposed BDT 2.10 per ton of goods for use of each kilometre of road inside Bangladesh.[4] These fees would determine how much benefit Bangladesh reaps from this deal as the only source of revenue from the project will be these charges.

Thanks for the very informative post, many things to learn.

They are the poorest part of not only South Asia, but probably all of Asia. When life is miserable, hopeless and depressive,…deflection and projection of this self directed hatred onto others, act as a relief from the agony of self hatred. Thats why you often find bigotry, racism and hatred in almost all utterly poor, backward and uneducated societies of the world.

Of course there are other factors too..
think what you want to think but there might be a reason why so less Bangladeshi goods are in indian market. I haven't seen a single bangladeshi item, not even clothes in India which are made in Bangladesh.

India blocks Bangladeshi exports mainly using non-tariff barriers such as arbitrarily changing criteria for product classification, valuation, location of expiry date etc. at the port of entry without prior notification causing Bangladeshi exporters to face losses. You guys also routinely come up with "anti-dumping" measures without presenting any evidence of dumping by Bangladesh. The same products get exported to other countries without trouble.

Even for garments, Bangladesh has significant cost advantage over India as labour costs are lower and production more efficient here compared to India but NTB's are restricting export growth in this segment as well.

India just cannot be trusted.

Thats why Bangladeshi garments can be found in any branded clothing store along with Indian made and other imported clothes, on the contrary how much tariff do you put on imported cars? So much so that our companies had to set up assembly plants in Bangladesh and yet face very high taxes because of which they’re unable to sell them in big numbers only a few hundred a year, any comments about them? For you to have higher export in India there should be a demand as well, its not that a small shop owner will import clothes from Bangladesh and sell, they get them locally made thats why most Made in BD goods are sold in branded outlets who import and sell them in India.

Like I said, they have their shills and agents in our ministries - bribe and get things done. Amazing....

All I can say is - walk into a higher priced boutique....

If they are being sold in Italian retail outlets, then why not in India.....

Well that not a secret is it? India dosent allow our products so how you gonna see them in your shops. Strangely our products are good enough for Norh America and Europe but not India.
