Mahindra Naval Systems poised for geometric growth | Business Line


PUNE, MARCH 4:
Mahindra Defence Naval Systems (MDNS), a company that makes a host of defence systems for the Indian Navy such as torpedo launchers, decoy launchers, sea mines and missile containers, is poised for geometric growth, Mahindra Group Chairman, Anand Mahindra, has said.

A part of the Group’s plan to build capability to enable it play a greater role in the indigenisation of India’s defence sector, MDNS has just begun production from a new, bigger plant at Chakan, and will focus on underwater systems.

“Long journeys begin with small steps, but it is important to enter because unlike other pilot projects that start small, this has to do with saving lives and keeping the country secure,” Mahindra said. The company's revenue had doubled from Rs 10 crore last year to Rs 20 crore this year, and was poised for geometric growth, he said, adding that while some products had been developed by them, DRDO was also working with it to develop new products.

Among the new products being developed are a New Torpedo Defence System and a heavy weight torpedo launcher. While the Group is currently going solo, Mahindra said that joint ventures or partnerships will be made whenever necessary.
 
Mahindra Defence Naval Systems Inaugurates new Chakan plant

New Delhi, March 4, 2014:
Mahindra Defence Naval Systems (MDNS) today inaugurated its new underwater systems and naval applications manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune. MDNS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mahindra Defence Systems, which is part of the USD 16.7 billion Mahindra Group. The new facility, which represents an important milestone in India’s rapidly expanding private defence industry was inaugurated by Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group.


According to Mr. Mahindra, “We are particularly proud of our Defence business which plays an increasingly critical role in protecting the nation and the brave men and women who defend it every single day. This new facility enhances our advanced manufacturing expertise in the area of naval defence systems. I am confident that it will provide our customers with a range of sophisticated yet cost effective solutions.”



“Mahindra Defence Systems now has a three dimensional capability encompassing Land, Sea and Air domains and we are also working to derive synergies between our Defence business and other Mahindra Group companies. Looking ahead there are a number of new projects that we are developing and we expect to see these come to fruition in the near future,” added Mr. S P Shukla, President – Group Strategy & Defence Sector and Chief Brand Officer, Mahindra Group.

MDNS supplies various types of launchers for ships, as well as systems and components to customers other than the Indian Navy. These include the Ordnance Factories Board, Atomic Energy Commission, Defence R&D Organisation and other private sector companies. The new plant will support the naval defence business of Mahindra Defence Systems, which already has a Land Systems and Radar Systems business that operate from Prithla, near Faridabad.


MDNS launchers are fitted on board certain front line warships of the Indian Navy. These were developed in-house and are fully indigenized. The company also supports many overseas firms in delivering on the offset requirements that they are required to provide through Indian industry.
