Chinese Long March 4B launches Gaofen-2 and BRITE-PL-2 | NASASpaceFlight.com

China’s return to launch action continued with the Tuesday launch of a new high-resolution observation satellite. The Gaofen-2 (GF-2) was launched at 03:15 UTC by a Long March-4B (Chang Zheng-4B) rocket from the LC9 launch complex of the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center. Also on board was the Polish satellite BRITE-PL-2, also known as “Heweliusz”.

China has successfully launched its most advanced high-definition earth observation satellite into orbit today, according to the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.

It was boosted by China’s famous Long March-4B carrier rocket. According to authorities, the observation satellite is able to take photos with the definition for one square meter object from 630 kilometers away in full color--almost double the definition of the previously launched Gaofen-1.

It will be used for geographic and resources surveys, environment and climate change monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster relief and city planning.
