Bahawalpur (Punjabi, Urdu: بہاولپور‎), is a city(district) located in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Bahawalpur is the 12th largest city in Pakistan with an estimated population of 798,509.[3] The city also lies near the ancient Derawar Fort in the Cholistan Desert near the border with India, and serves as the gateway to Pakistan's Lal Suhanra National Park.

Bahawalpur was once the capital of the former princely state of Bahawalpur ruled by Nawabs. The Nawabs of Bahawalpur were regarded as part of the Rajputana States.

Beautiful. Looking forward to the day when all historical sites in Pakistan are maintained like they are in Bahawalpur.

Yes true...also Bahawalpur need to be developed as a tourist hub, and south Punjab too including Multan region. Few people from north and Sindh, Karachi visits these areas. It should be in the tourism radar.

Also these magnificent palaces can be converted into luxurious hotels(a few of them) like heritage hotels done in GB of Khaplu and Baltit fort by the Agha Khan foundation. This will earn a good amount of money to be spent on maintenance and preservation of other sites and buildings, for local people benefit.

It is being done in KPK, more than 30 government rest houses is now open to public earning money, earlier reserved for government servants and money has to be spent instead of earning anything.

c. 1877: Nawab of Bahawalpur - Mohammad Bahawal Khan Abbasi V

After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, Nawab proved to be very helpful and generous to the government of Pakistan. He gave seventy million rupees to the government and the salaries of all the government departments for one month were also drawn from the treasury of Bahawalpur state. He gave his private property to the University of the Punjab, King Edward Medical College and the Mosque of Aitchison College, Lahore. At the time of the independence of Pakistan in 1947 all the princely states of the South Asia were given a choice to join either Pakistan or India. To try to convince the Nawab to join India, Pandit Nehru went to him while he was in London and offered various incentives in this regard but he didn’t accept them. On 5 October 1947 he signed an agreement with the government of Pakistan according to which Bahawalpur State acceded to Pakistan.
