Maggi noodles violated safety norms, no compromise on the issue, Union health minister JP Nadda says

Meet the man who destroyed Maggi and Rs 1300 crore market

New Delhi : It all started on the eve of Holi, last year. Sanjay Singh, the workaholic Food Safety Officer of UP asked his subordinates to pick up samples of a few edibles including packed food and sent them for routine tests to Laboratory. One of the items collected for test was Nestle’s most popular snack Maggi. A few samples of chips and spices were also picked up from local shops in Barabanki, a district close to Lucknow. The sealed samples were then parcelled to the government Lab in Gorakhpur. What happened afterwards is now a history for Sanjay Singh.

Speaking on phone from his office in Barabanki, the most talked about officer these days in UP, Sanjay said that tests reports of Gorakhpur Lab about Maggi caught him by surprise.” At first I thought the report could be a typing error by someone who prepared the report for us.. But later when I re-confirmed I was surprised to discover that Maggi contained a high level of ‘lead’ and MSG(monosodium glutamate). I informed my seniors about the content of the report,” Sanjay Singh told India Samvad.

In fact Sanjay was still not convinced with the report as the sample in question was a product like Maggi, a household name and one of the most sought after snack by children.” My perception about Nestle was that the company produced a high quality of edibles and conformed to all norms of food safety. So how can a product like Maggi contain lead and MSG. To ensure that our lab had not committed in any error I decided to pick up more samples of Maggi and send them again to Lab for a test.,” Sanjay added.

Keeping in mind the brand name that Nestle has in the market, the officer sent samples picked up from a super-market called ‘Easyday’ for another check in the same laboratory. Shockingly, the results were the same once again. He then notified Nestle about the irregularities which challenged the tests and demanded a fresh test in the Central Food Laboratory in Kolkata. The results were still the same when the test was conducted at the laboratory in Kolkata.

When Sanjay was asked why did he picked up only Maggi for such routine tests, the officer said that it was a random decision of my subordinates.” I just asked them to collect samples of instant food packets. They went to a nearby Tehsil shop and picked up Maggi packets. Let me make it clear, the issue became bigger because in the repeat tests the samples tested positive for lead and MSG. To ensure that other brand of noodles should also be put to tests, we have now sent samples of other brands like Yippie of ITC, Knorr of Hindustan Lever and Foodles of Smithkline. We have not been selective. Initially we collected packets of Maggi as it is one of the most sought after snack food.” Sanjay explained for being unbiased.

Sanjay Singh, the man who is behind the expose of high levels of hazardous chemicals in Maggi is not proud of what he has done. He told that it was part of his job and he does not deserve any kind of appreciation for his deeds. Singh has been posted as a Food Safety Officer in Barabanki since 2013. The officer hails from the city of Lucknow. He holds a PHD in chemistry from Lucknow University and an MSC in organic chemistry from Lucknow Christian College. The man started his career in Food Safety Office in 1998.

He told India Samvad that the process took a long time but the file had been moving at its usual pace. He also blamed the Postal Services for delaying the delivery of the sample of Maggi Noodles as the parcel landed up in Shimla instead of reaching Kolkata. He emphasized on the fact that these things have to go through a proper channel and hence the delay was caused. He also told India Samvad that the case was registered under Section 59. (1) with the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate. The penalty for the offence is imprisonment up to six months and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

Singh also added that lead is an accumulative poison and if consumed can be extremely harmful for the Central Nervous System and does irreparable damage while MSG is highly cancerous. He also added that high levels of lead and MSG can lead to increased aggression among consumers. He also blamed increased consumption of fast-food for the increasing crime rate in the country, and especially among youngsters.

The fact remains that at the end of these tests a fast food noodles market worth over Rs 1300 crore in the country has been hit hard by this officer. Sanjay’s two tests have destroyed the two minute noodle rip off.

But in Bangladesh, it is absolutely safe to eat. Our Health Ministry told us that. At least in India, your government don't look over your health concerns if someone put a few extra bucks in their pocket.

Told you what ?
Did they told this ?

Nestlé has faced criticism of its advertising not adhering to marketing regulations in developed countries, and making misleading claims in developing countries. Also, in October 2008 Nestlé mistakenly aired a commercial meant for Bangladeshi television on British TV. The advert made false claims that the noodles would "help to build strong muscles, bone and hair". The British Advertising Standards Authority
said that the advert did not abide by the newEU
consumer protection legislation, by which advertisers have to provide proof of health claims.[7]

What would be your opinion about this ? What was your 'honest efficient ' officials action after this ?
British got a good idea about BD and their Jamatis .

I think Nestle did a criminal selectivness in distributing Maggie packets.
The packets they distributed in Kerala and Maharashtra has less lead .But was 17 times in UP and some other states.
What did they thought about Indians ?

Good Work .Sanjay Singh.
This should be a warning to entire MNCs .

Thank you India for giving us the clue

Well these western MNCs, like this Swiss Nestle , thinks that we Asians are sometype of subhumans. They have international standard in Western advanced natiin and substandard in developing nations like us .
9 types are banned .The destructiin of the 1300 Maggi market should be a warning to other MNCs.

What about the popularity of Maggi in Pakistan ? Does anyone in Pakistan tested that samples?

lol....they told what exactly ??? @levina

How do people eat that Maggi crap is beyond my understanding. Nestle's products taste terrible. Any instant noodles is bad for you (especially kids).

They make good coffee though.

. .
Our Jamaati friend in here said that Maggi in his nation is soooo healthy.
You just proved my point that you are stupid.

What I said was that our health ministry was given bribes to say that "Maggi" in Bangladesh was healthy. Maybe give up RSS Hinduvta schools and go attend an actual school for a change.
Dont worry Jamaati.
Next time think twice before comes here for trolling.
Now cry me a river
Look up dumbass.

Haha in BD health concern 90% BDs cant even afford a Maggie so why don't you take a hike Bangladeshi

You need to get it tested in your National Labs and FDA to find out if it has Lead and other harmful content or not.

. .
This will also be a good test case for India's power as a market for international brands. Loss of sales from restriction in India would be huge, the impact on brand would be just as bad, if not worse.
The impact was huge, The CEO of Nestle came running in a charter flight today to clarify Maggi was safe in a Press conference in Delhi. He was trying to justify lead content, citing our Laboratories and methods of testing are wrong.
When the same labs approved earlier he didn't question its methods of testing or its procedures, now that the same labs found lead content and MSG content in Maggi, he is questioning those labs and Scientists. Earlier it was ok, but now it is not?

Knorr is more popular here.

It will contain MSG(mono sodium glutamate) but do send the samples to your National FDA labs to get it checked.

Oh Sorry buddy .
I didnt read your second sentence.
I dont know that you can post sane comments .(Something that I couldnt see in your posts)

Still your ministry allowed those stuffs even after that advertisement issue.
Terrific.

Knorr is more popular here.

Your govt should also check these noodle stuff. We cant trust this instant meals.

Ya I caught bits of that conference. India is a big market, so its logical what he is trying to do. The dude is just doing his best to minimize the damage to his company and he make any argument, no matter how silly it would seem.

From what I gather, their stock tumbled 20% as of yesterday and they stand to lose the 60% market share they enjoyed in India. Any idea, what percentage India formed of their global sales? I believe that India is the largest market for Maggi.

Either way, we need to make it clear that you don't get away with this sh*t in India, even if you did earlier.

Please, our environmental minister said that dolphins aren't real, so, something like that isn't far-fetched.

.
Is this some kind of propaganda to extort money from the MNCs?
Because last time i checked, the basic air quality in India was equally cancerous......so was drinking the filthy water from the rivers. Or the industrial waste that gets dumped into the sea.
