I hear they are not into newly developed Neptune series engines yet, as CV market is not ready for high power engines (300-500 HP)

As a southie & Malayali, I am a fan of Ashok Leyland too. But the example you quoted isn't accurate.

There are two Globus models- the first one was a rear engine one based on Hispano Divo model. It was AGCL built ( hence typical shoddy built quality) & was underpowered when compared with B7R, but comparable with Isuzu.

The globus bought by KSRTC was again an AGCL built body on a 1616 chassis. It had engine driven AC and struggled on the ghat sections. AFAIK, they don't even make that chassis anymore. They're only making 1618 today.

Marcopolo wasn't involved in both of them. Actually Tata Marcopolos have better build quality- there mini/midi/city buses look quite good. I am looking forward to their paradiso model.

Mahindra & Mahindra working to build world’s most affordable electric SUV

The compact SUV with electric powertrain has been codenamed S107, said people with knowledge of the matter. After the Verito electric version, this is the company’s next major project in the space.

MUMBAI: Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is said to have begun working on what is being pegged as the most affordable electric SUV in the world through its Mahindra Electric unit, formerly known as Mahindra Reva.

The compact SUV with electric powertrain has been codenamed S107, said people with knowledge of the matter. After the Verito electric version, this is the company's next major project in the space. The idea is to combine the strength of Mahindra's SUV expertise with that of Reva in electric cars. The company, which sells the E2O entry level electric vehicle, recently showcased the Halo sportscar concept.

"If anyone is preparing feverishly for a disruptive future of mobility, it is Mahindra," group chairman Anand Mahindra had told shareholders at the 70th annual general meeting this month. Electric cars are a key element of this. While the Verito electric addresses the needs of the practical buyer, a compact electric SUV caters to those who are keen on driving as an experience.

"We fully intend to be profitable participants in this new world," Mahindra had said. Mahindra & Mahindra's Chief Executive for Automotive Pravin Shah told ET that the company is considering electrification of its KUV model, but the plans are yet to be finalised.

"We are looking at adding more SUVs as well as small commercial vehicle to our electric vehicle portfolio. The focus will be on offering more affordable electric vehicles for higher accessibility. Mahindra Reva will continue to address the range anxiety with continuous development," Shah said.

Ford India is also exploring a hybrid-electric powertrain option for its all-new EcoSport planned for 2020-21, although this is at an early stage. The company is also exploring the possibility of a CNG version of the KUV. Mahindra expects modest annual sales of 6,000 units each for the electric and CNG versions, said one of the persons cited above.

The move is seen as a fresh attempt to boost Mahindra Electric, which is focussing on overseas markets and fleet operators to build scale and become viable.

Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra have formed a consortium to develop certain components for electric and hybrid cars and make them more affordable and accessible for the masses. Ford India dropped out of the grouping as it's exploring the EcoSport option.

With the price tag expected to be as low as Rs 10 lakh, these models in the works will be pitched against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Creta and Ford EcoSport.

Kevin Flynn, managing director of Fiat Chrysler India, declined to comment on specific price points for localised Jeep, but said: "The locally made Jeep will be attainable for a significant part of the market."

Ok temporary importing...but they will be producing from 2017 onwards it seems. Good.

Well no one should stop them from trying. Its probably the import duty jacking it up so much....plus cost of wherever they are importing it from.

I am sure the results will only encourage them to produce it locally hehe.

Sure, but to charge anyone in any country 71+ lakhs for what is essentially a piece of flimsy plastic with an engine and a roll bar, is just wrong. Let's wait for them to start producing locally, though.

I do know that Ashok Leyland has an assembly plant and coach building here in the UAE (In RAK). Its Mostly Indian commercial Vehicles that run most for large transportation for Companies and Schools . This Plant handles the MENA region

Tata Prima Trucks - i have yet to see one here - BUT TATA has its NOVA Series trucks which is essential a Daewoo Truck re-branded (After Tata bought Daewoo in 2002)

STILL there is a scope for more, especially for smaller 09- 12 passengers , where the TOYOTA Hilac Class of vehicles is dominate - of late there have been a number accidents in this Class where high no. of passengers have been injured or died. Here there is a change that the Govt might banned the use of such vehicles as passenger carriers !

Thus i see the Force Motors Force Traveller a good fit

Too smart by 1/2 .

Marketing gurus must knew their game starting at the very top end of the market, otherwise the whole chain of vendor-suppliers is deeply rooted in India thanks to 2 generations of Willy's 'Jeep'-M&M 'Jeep'.

I may have done it exactly the other way around staring with an assembly shop, letting vendors-supplier credit take care of start-up costs, applying Make-in-India scheme to the whole thrust and going straight for the bottom-to-mid market play.

Not like they have to worry about branding or manufacturing related process like hiring (re: new hiring policy) or lack of integration integration experience.

A straight jack buy-out like Atul or Vikram Auto may be even faster.
