JSW is an Indian Logistics company and they have ordered eight vessels from Bangladesh. In India breaking coconuts is religiously auspicious way to bless a new vessel.

Munazat was also offered prior to this ceremony.

They have ordered a total of 14 ships not eight. Great to see such deals going through, good for regional economic integration.

I mean they could have ordered to christened the ship with champagne. Which the danish customers didn't do I believe?

The Danes were quite sensitive as I recall about the tradition of christening their ships with alcohol in a Muslim country. Coconuts present no such issues.....

Western Marine inaugurates construction of 20 cargo vessels

Officials of Western Marine Shipyard Limited (WMShL) and Evergreen Shipping Limited are seen laying keel for construction of 20 units of 1500-DWT Class cargo ships at their yard on Sunday.

Western Marine Shipyard Limited (WMShL) inaugurated construction works of 20 units of 1500-DWT CLASS Cargo Ships for Evergreen Shipping Limited through a keel laying ceremony at their shipyard on Sunday.

Evergreen Shipping Managing Director Md Mostan Billa Adil, S Alam Group Director (Technical) Engineer Shahidul Alam, Director (Admin) Md Rashedul Alam, Union Bank Chairman Shahidul Alam and WMShL Managing Director Sakhawat Hossain were present at the inaugural ceremony among others.

The company officials said the vessels with 60.60-meter length will be handed over to the buyer within next 36 months gradually.

The vessels will be built under the supervision of classification society ‘DNV-GL’ (Norway-Germany).

The classification company Regional Manager Marian handed over the keel laying certificate to the WMShL and Evergreen Shipping authorities at the ceremony.

An agreement for building the 20 units of CLASS Cargo Ship was signed prior between Western Marine Group and Evergreen Shipping Limited on February 16 this year.

These ships will be built at a cost of Tk. 250 crore, which is considered as one of the biggest contracts in terms of number of ships to be built in the history of Bangladeshi shipbuilding industry, said the officials. Also notable is the fact that this agreement is between two local companies, which highlights the amount of coastal trade activity between regional countries and Bangladesh' part in that trade.

Machineries for each of the 1,500 metric-tonne capacity vessels will be collected from Japan and European countries.

Evergreen Shipping Limited Managing Director Md Mostan Billa Adil expressed his satisfaction over the construction activities of various types of ships at the WMShL yard.

Union Bank Chairman Shahidul Alam in his speech hoped that as different coastal agreements are being signed the WMShL will play significant role in this area with their efficiency.

WMShL Managing Director Sakhawat Hossain said construction of the ships at a local yard will save huge foreign currencies apart from creating employment for around 2,000 people for next three years.

It will also help expansion and development of backward linkage industries, he observed.

Once built and become operational the ships will also play important role in fulfilling increasing demand of containerized shipping industry in the country and in the region, he added.

Note: The second image above shows the design of these mini coastal container carriers. I think with these builds as well as the JSW builds (in addition there are other European builds in the order book as well), Western Marine looks to be set for the next three to five years. 14 cos invest $135m at Uttara EPZ so far


A total of 14 companies have so far set up factories on 140 plots at Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Rangpur
It created employments for 24 thousand people, 65 per cent of them are rural women.

This was disclosed by Deputy Manager (Commercial Operation) of Uttara EPZ Khaled Mahmud, according to a report by BSS.

The 14 companies, including five from Hong Kong, one from the United Kingdom and eight locals, have invested 135.63 million US dollars at the EPZ.

The foreign companies are producing export-oriented wig, coffin, spectacle, leather bag, belts, wallet, sweater and other products for global market while local ones are producing readymade garments, other goods and accessories for foreign companies.

"The number of employed people would become 50 thousand, including 500 foreigners, after setting up factories on more 47 plots now ready for allocation," Mahmud added.

According to former president of Nilphamari Chamber SM Shafikul Alam, thousands of people used to struggle for earning living due to lack of job during the lean 'monga' periods of 'Aswin and Kartik' months in agri-economy based Nilphamari district in the pasts.

"The Uttara EPZ, however, has now changed their life by creating jobs and other opportunities of income generation," Shafikul added.

Are these aluminium frames or chrome alloy?

These are made in batches per customer specs, just like shoes. I couldn't tell you just by looking at them what material was used for the tubes.

But I have seen aluminium tubes being used before as well as chromoly, which are higher cost materials. They can fabricate out of most metal tube types, carbon fiber GFRP or CFRP tubes are a rarity still.

Majority of these bikes are on the lower-end cost-wise and made of lightweight high strength steel tubes. They also use Chinese/Taiwanese derailleur and brakes mostly for export. Local parts are used on local market products. Would be great low cost products for the South African market I'd assume, labor cost is super low, even lower than India, and China of course.

As I said, each batch of order is customized.

BANGLADESH BUILDS PATROL BOAT FOR KENYA

Shipbuilding in Bangladesh is still in its infancy, and the country’s few yards have only built about 40 small ships for export over the past five years, but the Western Marine facility near Chittagong has been expanding its capabilities in combination with investment from Denmark’s JGH Marine and recently delivered the offshore patrol vessel Doria to Kenya’s Ministry of Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture.

Built at a cost of $33 million, the 54.7m long boat is powered by three MTU engines driving two propellers and a waterjet, with the propeller engines produce 4 000 kW of power and the waterjet engine 2 720 kW. This gives the 350 tonne displacement ship a cruising speed of 20- to 25-knots and a top speed of 35-knots.

A helicopter pad has been fitted on the aft deck, which can accommodate a five-ton helicopter, and accommodation has been arranged for 12 crew and up to 60 passengers.
