American/Chinese joint venture to build cruise vessels in China
Thursday, 29 Oct 2015
American cruise operator Carnival Corporation said it has formed a final joint venture with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and China’s state fund China Investment Corporation to build cruise ships in China and launch a large cruise line in the country.

CSSC will build the cruise ships. The 25-year deal is estimated to include investments by all companies of about US$4 billion in the first ten years of the partnership including new cruise ship orders. The joint venture, to be based in Hong Kong, will order about five ships from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of CSSC, with a total investment of around 25 billion yuan. Each vessel of more than 130,000 tonnes will be more than 300m long and have a capacity for about 5,000 passengers and crew. An executive from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding said the yard expects to start building the first ship next year and deliver it to the joint venture in 2020..

Can you tell me more about the ship building industry?

Looking from a global perspective, shipbuilding is dominated by only the three East Asian countries. In terms of gross tonnage, China was the largest shipbuilder in 2014 reaching 22.68 million GT, just marginally larger than South Korea.

However if taken into account of Korean capacity invested overseas, say in Philippines (e.g. Hanjin Heavy Industries' Subic Shipyard), Vietnam (e.g Hyundai Heavy Industries), then South Korea effectively owns the world number one largest shipbuilding capacity.

Moreover, despite facing increasing challenges from Japan, & China in particular, SK still maintain a huge lead in high-value ships e.g. LNG carriers.

Shipbuilding has very long supply chain just as in any heavy industries. For example, a very deep supply chain in steel industry is essential, hence countries with a strong foundation of heavy industry like Japan, South Korea are leading the market, and China is fast catching up.

I recently read that only around 10% of the components in the China produced LNG carrier were locally sourced.

I believe too!
And their IIT shipbuilding graduates are on their way back from shipbuilding department of NASA!

Anyway just come back from a banker forum in Beijing, will go Shandong tomorrow on a solar farm project. Officials from central government, Chinese bankers, some Korean and German guys there as well, discussing tech, policies, "Industry 4.0", "China 2025", very insightful! Maybe I will write a thread later, gonna tag you.
