M-109A2 rebuilt factory HIT

A piece of equipment that went back to the factory and was rebuilt to the same production limits as a new equipment.It requires the repair or replacement of worn out components and modules. Parts subject to degradation affecting the performance or the expected life of the whole system are replaced. Remanufacturing is a form of a product recovery process that differs from other recovery processes in its completeness: a remanufactured machine should match the same customer expectation as new machines.
System is almost zeroed using reused, repaired and new parts.

The SP Gun is rebuilt to the OEM’s specifications and parameters through state of the art rebuilt facilities, machinery/equipment, test benches, optimum quality standards and dedication of the professional work force. Most economical rebuild is achieved through maximum reclamation, engineering management and computerized `inventory.

Pakistan has almost around 400 M109's of all types in service.
That's one huge step in right direction and probably is foundation stone towards a home built SP gun.
Since HIT manufactures barrel,so it can be safely assumed that M109 barrel is being manufactured at HIT.Status of power pack Detroit Diesel Model 8V71T rebuilt cannot be ascertained along with status of those parts which are being manufactured locally and are being used in rebuilt.I assume that electronic modules are being imported while mechanical are being built in house.

The requirements are different for varied terrains and formations. The backbone of armored forces is M-109 which is tracked and 155mm in caliber. This could change to wheeled SP in future if PA wants. Few are heavy guns, M-110. Infantry formations use different calibers (105mm, 122mm, 130mm, 155mm, 203mm) but all are towed, The formations in Siachen use pack howitzers which are 105 mm.

At the moment, the following points can arise:

1. Commonality of caliber to 155mm?
a. What about pack howitzers in Siachen and other forces on LOC which deploy 105mm.
b. Is the solution then a light weight 155mm piece to replace all artillery (105mm, 122mm, 130mm) on LOC ?
c. Fate of M-110s and towed 203mm ?

2. Complete retirement of field guns like 130mm ? Only howitzers should be kept in service.

3. Should HIT jump straightaway on a 155mm instead of transitioning from 105mm to a bigger caliber ?

4. Truck (5 ton or 10 ton) mounted 155mm caliber should be tested for Armored forces ? or a tracked option (like M-109) is the only contender ? Should an 8 x 8 wheeled (like APC) option be sought rather than a local truck.

M109 is formidable, latest upgrades very good. India paid massive amounts for just 100 K9 Artillery systems from South Korea that are not that much better. We have 400 M109s, upgrading them is great

get light 155mm for forward bases

get choppers that can carry those light 155 guns
 
Use them abundantly inside Afganistan to make a terrorist-free 50km buffer wide zone along the border!!! Once the drones spot the scums they're gone en masse...
 
People here often mistakenly confuse overhauling and designing a new build.

Replacing parts, or building parts using blueprints is different than coming up with a new more efficient design.

Just because they can rebuild certain components doesn't mean they have the know how to design a new, modern product or parts for that matter. They simply have the capability to rebuild using pre-existing drawings.

We can't keep a simple steel plant operational. Do you seriously think we have the required expertise to build a new, modern product without having zero metallurgy breakthroughs?

Sure they can build barrels, or even Al Khalid tanks but all of that is based on 50 year old technology/metallurgy.

During Gen APK era it was discussed that PA would shift to 155mm completly,don't know what happened of that because in last 10 years we haven't made any major 155mm purchase.
a-105 mm is going to stay for a good amount of time may be PRC would come up with a new 122mm pack howitzer and we would go for that.
b-AH-4 155mm can possibly be a solution for 122 and 130 and G7 can be for 105.105 would stay since it suits mountain warfare.
c-203mm would stay and i wish we should develop guided ammo for these guns along with new 52 cal barrels.

Simply upgun them to 155mm like rest of world is doing,we have almost 500 of them.

3. Should HIT jump straightaway on a 155mm instead of transitioning from 105mm to a bigger caliber ?
We are already making heart of these guns a.k.a barrels,it's something which isn't difficult for us.We are just not doing that to me it seems we have enough of guns.
4. Truck (5 ton or 10 ton) mounted 155mm caliber should be tested for Armored forces ? or a tracked option (like M-109) is the only contender ? Should an 8 x 8 wheeled (like APC) option be sought rather than a local truck.
If SH-15 is coming,behold that PA is either looking for mix of wheeled and tracked in ops or is going for an inventory which caters our needs according to topography.

5. The pros and cons of shifting all artillery to 155mm caliber.
Everyone is switching to only one or two kind of cals,that means ease of operation and logistics.
1-NATO is shifted to 105 and 155mm.
2-Russia is going for 122 and 152 mm.
3-PRC has going for 122mm,152mm and 155mm(with rumours that it coming years it's going to have 155mm and 122mm).
4-Our enemy next door Bharat is all out going for 155mm,they are even upguning 130 into 155mm and seems like by the end of this decade they would either have 105 and 155mm or only 155mm guns.

And USA made a canon with range of 73 km with precision strike capability.

155 ammo has generally kill zone of approximately 50 meters and casualty radius 100 meters,guided ammo has CEP between 5m to 20 m while unguided has between 10 to 30:enjoy:
