London 2016? Plans to move Rio Olympics to UK amid concerns over Brazil’s preparations - Olympics - Sport - The Independent

Olympic officials have secretly asked if London would be in a position to take over hosting the 2016 games from Rio de Janeiro amid major concerns with the city’s preparations.

The informal enquiry looked to determine if enough of the venues used in the 2012 games could be brought back into use for the next Olympics in two years time, the Evening Standard reports.

The revelation comes as an International Olympic Committee vice president last month branded Brazil’s planning “the worst I have experienced”.

John Coates, who has closely monitored progress from Rio, told a press conference in Sydney that the city is “in many, many ways” further behind Athens was two years before the 2004 games - the current benchmark for last minute completions.

Calling the situation on the ground “critical”, Mr Coates said the IOC has been forced to make an “unprecedented” intervention by forming a special task force to try to speed up preparations.

He added however that “there is no plan B” as the games could not be moved to a different city at such a late stage.

Since then, it seems that the IOC may well have changed its mind and started searching for a backup plan which could involve London.

A source told the Standard: “At a comparable planning stage in 2004 Athens had done 40 per cent of preparations on infrastructure, stadiums and so on. London had done 60 per cent. Brazil has done 10 per cent - and they have just two years left. So the IOC is thinking, ‘What’s our plan B?’

“Obviously, the answer would be to come back to London. It’s very unlikely but it would be the logical thing to do.”

Director of event consultants Allium, Will Glendinning, who worked on the London Organising Committee for the 2012 games said that there was “more than enough time” for London to prepare.

“Yes of course it can be done,” he said. “One of the UK’s greatest exports is our major events capability. The expertise exists and regarding facilities we are a couple of years away.”

But a spokeswoman for the IOC said the possibility of Rio 2016 being moved to London was a “non-starter and unfeasible”.

These western nations always think that ONLY they can conduct such a large scale event successfully, neither Africa, nor Asia nor Latin America can do it but only THEY. This was the same rhetoric surrounding the run up to CWG-2010.
Obviously they r rite. They are less population and more economy. They are developed. They dont face all those problem which we do.

And bout CWG, No other country had parts of Stadiums falling months before the date. U wud be foolish to call CWG a great success.

Indian CWG-2010 were embarrassing for India. The humiliation for India was huge! Your British masters in London were disappointed that they trusted India with such an important task.

Poor, peasant, third world countries like India or Brazil should NEVER host major sporting events. You do not have the skills, resources, money or organisation to host such important events.

Countries like Britain and China both hosted wonderful and successful Olympics.

If you think anybody will take your Chini noodle rant seriously over here, well go on waste your time.

The Commonwealth Games was seen as a success overall, especially due to the bad start. Shit trolling.

@Topic Being a long time resident of London, this will take a huge toll on our city's finances. Unlikely to happen here.

paisa kon dega ... it will be stupid to host it again coz we might not get same level of visitor or enthusism.

U remember anything such that clouded Beijing Olympics?

Dont be naive. China still has its share of 3RD WORLD Problems. Dont compare China with Britain or America. THey will laugh at ur living standards.

like people above said, its typical western wishful thinking and feeling surpior. Tough Brazil is a really a bad place to hold a world cup, it would be better giving it Russia, China or India to hold world cup 2014

i will welcome my country hosting it again if Brazil cant.:-)
Kind of surprise Brazil is having such difficulties. As its economy is bigger than even India, it has gdp per capital higher than even China, and has natural resources, manpower, capital etc. i don't understand why they having so much problems. Though i must admit many countries had similar issues hosting such a massive/big event like Olympics(even the U.K and Australia had issues prior to hosting the games), only a few countries in the world can afford to host such a massive competition. I think Brazil's problems have more to do with management/operational rather than resources/know how. like china's problem was more human rights than anything about infrastructure. Overall i think Brazil will be ok before the games. its common for delays to happen during construction/preparations.

Usually Sheila Gilmore is one of the better Labour MP's on social security issues but her response was unbelievable, and a wider indication of why Labour has lost support in Scotland/and elsewhere.
Regarding sanctions, it was always likely to be logical for the government to extend sanctions to non acceptance of zero hours contracts, considering that turning up late for 'charity' work or workfare results in a sanction, as is failure to attend the jobcentre every day to sign on. The whole system is now geared toward the sanctions regime. Whether this new step is legal or not is unclear, the government will enact retrospective legislation
An interesting insight into the govt mindset was provided by A DWP official recently (a Mr Couling) who appeared before a committee of MSP's (at Holyrood) regarding the rise in food banks. His response was that the rise in people seeking help was solely down to more food banks being set up, that is supply rather than demand. Unbelievably, the same official went on to argue that "Many welcome the jolt sanctions can give them". Members of the committee were stunned by his attitude.
Very disappointing.:disagree::angry:

lol sorry for the second comment, thought was typing it on another thread regarding the U.K .:hitwall:
